Non-steel Fenders & Hood?

Hi folks - I was cleaning my '15 X5 35d the other day and noticed that the fenders sounded different when tapped than the door. Today I had my iPad in the garage and sure enough, the magnetic cover attaches to the roof, doors and rear quarter but not to the front fenders nor the hood! What material are these parts? Aluminum perhaps? Surely not stainless

They are made of aluminum.

Push the fenders (wings for those of us in the UK). They flex. A lot. They're plastic

Yes, this all makes sense...clearly not steel everywhere. Less weight and less chance of nasty rust from our salty roads = happy!
