Production Number

Good afternoon all,

Just ordered my 2016 X6 50i M sport yesterday, and got my production number this morning. I have to say I am very excited now that I know the build order has been submitted, even though this was my plan since June. Just had to wait until I got closer to my lease end date.

So, I typed in my production number on the My BMW website to ensure the build is to my exact specifications. I'm a bit overly cautious at this point, because back in 2008, when I placed the order for my 2009 X6, when I finally took delivery of my car back then, there were a couple minor features that were overlooked during the build process. Not a deal breaker, I still signed for the car back then, but I can admit being disappointed about the features I checked off that never made it to my car back then.

Which brings me to my point. After typing in my production number today, I can see that the exterior color is not what I ordered yesterday. Should I be paranoid at this point, or is it too early to assume that my order is already being ruined?

Have any of you experienced a jacked up order after going to pick up your new car, only to find that it's not completely what you ordered? I only ask because I can reluctantly accept my future car if it had a minor oversight, but something like getting the exterior color wrong would make me turn away and tell them to start over.

In fact, I am so particular about my next X6, that I believe that I would send them back to drawing board if I noticed any of my ordered options were neglected.

What are your thoughts?

They can't give you a wrongly ordered color...neither should you be accepting if the pull comes to shove and they actually call you to pick up your vehicle with a different color....I seriously doubt it though...just send a note to your dealer just to make sure they are on the same page with you.
I've seen folks unhappy about little and minor misses, but something as big a color??!!! I haven't heard of.

My thoughts, exactly. I will reach out to them tomorrow, because I really expect my car to be built to my exact specifications.

One of the main reasons I didn't go for the full M is because of some of the specifics only available to the "lesser than M" vehicles.

Mine did the same. Was white when I got it and was properly grey a few days later. I have read that BMW recycles build numbers so I wouldn't sweat it. Get your dealer to print you out a vehicle inquiry report which shows the build color.

Thanks for sharing. I went with Space Gray as well, and my current car is white and I don't want another white care back to back like that. I did feel like I was being overly paranoid, but that was because of my '09 X6 delivery experience, when my old X6 was missing a couple minor features that were checked off on the original build sheet.

I will take your advice and give it about a week before I confront the dealership, lol.

When you get your VIN# enter it in at http://bimmer.work or bmwvin.com and it should list everything on your build sheet.

Just to make you feel better, many other members here and other forums have experienced the same as you when they checked their car on BMW website. More than likely the car that your dealer is using was probably originally built for their lot cars. They are just using that allocation to modify for your build instead.

Here are others recently who had the same concerns

This! BMW's X5 production line is constantly running 24/7 so there is always a build spec'ed waiting to be built. If the car isn't sold to a customer then dealers take that production slot and modify the specs to what the customer wants. There is always a slight delay when you try tracking it by production number before it updates to the new build specs. It will eventually correct itself but the safest way is to check www.bmwvin.com.

Get the the VIN and look it up that way as well as get your dealer to email you the exact build so that way IF anything is wrong you have complete back up that they screwed up.

Thanks for the info. you broke it down in a manner that I can understand completely.

I'm just excited now, and ready for the keys, but I know it will take about 2 months for that to happen.

In the meantime, I just want to rest easy k ow that when I finally get the car, it's exactly as I ordered it. Don't wanna flip over desks at the dealership, especially right around the holidays, lol

Solid advice. I will touch base with them every other week to ensure nothing goes wrong with my future car during the building process

Right on point guys, my 2016 F15 prod# on BMWUSA showed the wrong color but corrected itself few days later. Also to get last 7 digits of your VIN, right click on the webpage of track your build to view source code. It worked for me after learning from this article. http://www.bmwblog.com/2014/04/23/tr...rder-delivery/
