Wikipedia is not the best place to source information, but if you can vouch the sources the government does classify it under small trucks.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_utility_vehicle

I call it an suv. I guess a truck can be closed off rather than having an open bed. Think food truck.
From Wikipedia:

BMW branded the X5 as a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) rather than an SUV, to emphasize its on-road ability despite its size. Like the Lexus RX 300, the X5 heralded the shift from light truck-based body-on-frame SUVs to crossovers underpinned by unibody car platforms that would come to fruition in the late 2000s. Among German luxury automakers, while the Mercedes-Benz M-Class had beaten the X5 to the market by a year, the X5 was the first to use a unibody chassis whereas the M-Class used a light truck platform until its second generation. While the Lexus RX is based on the Toyota Camry mass market sedan, the X5 shares its underpinnings with the BMW 5 Series performance luxury sedan.

technically it is a truck. and in many parts of the country suvs are colloquially called trucks. so....get off your high horse.
It is more of a pet peeve but apparently having an opinion on this forum makes you a know-it-all on a high horse

Thank you sir but I'm still unsure why you quoted my response and writing such a long narrative. It really doesn't state that it is not a truck or a light truck. A crossover is partially an suv and sedan. Still half truck or small truck.

Anyhow, enjoy your ridiculously fast suv/truck or skateboard. . I know I have.

It's pretty simple.
Body on frame = truck
Unibody = car or crossover

The semantics on this thread are kind of humorous.

It is clear what the OP was stating. His intent was correctly portrayed and communicated.

"Big heavy vehicle" same intent. Same message.

Truck or not, I think the thing we all can agree on is that anybody who uses the term "Sports Activity Vehicle" or "SAV" should be beat with a big stick.

If you think the semantics in this thread are humorous, you should check out the comments section on Youtube, just pick any trending video.

I tend to stay away from the comments section on YouTube. It appears to me that all those people are small, angry people.

I try to keep company, as much as possible, with happy people that choose to be friendly rather than temperamental and arguemetative.

It makes life so much better.

Anyone whose owned a full size RR or an LR4/Discovery can tell you the registration comes up as a "station wagon"... I do not think anyone on here would classify any of those as a wagon but for some reason the gov't does. A "truck" by definition usually has a bed, ladder frame or a monocoque chassis or all three. Is an X1, X3, Q5 or a Q3 or a Mini-Van a "truck", nope...

Hahaha... Agreed, I simply refer to it as car or X5 but never a "truck".

Timberwolf, I took the Burger Motorsports JB stage 1 off my 2014 X5 50i and put it on my 2017 X5 50i and noticed a reduction in performance than with the car just in factory standard tune. I have now twice compared the Sports power and torque display readings with the tune on and off.

With the tune on I get LOWER performance readings than with the tune on.

Would you be able to test it also?

Another individual claimed the same based on the Sport Displays but never did dyno testing for base or post.

My wife's a Texan by birth, and to tease her, I call the X5 the "Beemer truck". She wants to slap me each and every time.

I need to get my VBOX back and confirm this. Dyno is one thing, but real world performance is where it counts. I'll test 0 to 60, 0 to 100 and 60 to 130 before and after. I'll use full auto mode to minimize human error.

And for all those truck vs SAV/SUV folks, have you not heard of a euphemism? Jeesh. Was just making a point. I've had 11 BMWs in the last 20 years so I'm aware of the specifics of each platform. Just trying to draw a descriptive contrast between a 3300lbs sports car and a 5200lbs SAV...

Calling an SUV like the X5 a "Truck" seems to be an American / Canadian thing.

Over on this side of the pond a truck is this....

I don't even think Americans here call that a truck but refer them to as a semi

Americans like to call these trucks

ok, so I tend to be pretty gentle on my driving.

But ironic to this thread: I was just driving back to my office and I got cut off twice by the same Maserati. He was dipping in and out of traffic.

Anyway, I got annoyed. I put it into sport which I very rarely do and pulled my shifter to the left.

And dayum, this big truck can move.....

I was literally on this guys ass in the left lane and he could not pull away from me. I was extremely surprised with how fast this thing is. My guess is that he was too.

I find it ballsy in regular comfort mode, play with the doo dads a little bit and this sucker can move.

So fast, especially for a truck.
