Air Scoops

Does anyone know why the two front air scoops on the M sport front bumper aren't functional like on the X5 M? I just got my X5 a few weeks ago and it is the only thing about the truck I don't like. Couldn't it benefit from the extra cooling or is it an aerodynamics thing?

It really gives it a cheap look IMO. Must people modify it with after market mesh replacement parts. But even those are only half the grill. I'd like to know why we don't have full mesh on these parts...is it hiding something back there?

Perhaps it is due to it NOT being an X5M?

Agree, definitely looks cheesy. This change was one of the first things I did to my F15. I added the M50D wings (painted body color) and open grilles (both sides)...totally changes the look of the front end.

I agree. Everytime I look at it I think of an 80's Camaro with the fake louvered hood!! Do they make a grill that is open all the way??

You don't want to do full open, because the top half hides the bumper reinforcement beam.

Oh and the reason they are closed on the 35i and 35d, is because nothing behind it.
On the M50d, there are oil coolers on each side.
While 50i, have oil cooler on the passenger side.

Unfortunately, either from me or Europe.
Which either way won't help you at all due to the currency exchange.

Those enormous horrible fake grills bug me to no end. They look ridiculously cheap. Surely BMW could have figured out something a bit more palatable to go with their sportier trim?

+1. MB and Audi does this as well.

Maybe Porsche and jaguar might not?

The thing is for most people that fake grill will pass for additional aero dynamics and performance upgrades and BMW knows that there are stupid people out there that will accept these faux grill openings.

Pretty sure Porsche front bumper doesn't change regardless of Sport Package. Their sport package gives a different exhaust+tips and full body colour. As for Jaguar I think they are on this with the germans as well lol.

Buy from Brian Jessel in Vancouver and have it shipped to you. They'll fit in a FedEx or Purolator bag...voila!

Ugh. I thought I hated the M Sport fake grills already but just noticed today that there's a small gap on the outside edge of those plastic pieces to let air through to the tire well.

It's even worse than I thought - not only are those huge fake solid plastic grills totally cheesy looking but the gap on the outside make it look like they don't fit properly!

These may have become my #1 hated car design feature, just barely above fake exhaust tips (like the ones where you can see the round tail pipe extending through a fake rectangular exhaust tip).

Those front scoops are the reason I didn't go with the M-sport package. In hindsight, I should have gone with it anyway. Next one I won't make that mistake.
