M3 in for service, brand new X5 loaner

My M3 went in for service to have the brake heat shields upgraded to stop the dreaded squeal when you pick up a pebble lol.

I was given a brand new (3 miles) X5 35xi. Jet black/ mocha. It was a basic car, cold weather, drivers assistance and premium packs.... but the vehicle is really very nice.

Perfect seating position, smooth quiet drivetrain that offers up impeccable shifts time after time. The layout of the interior is spot on, and the rear hatch offers a very generous space. The blown 6 provides plenty of effortless acceleration. This isn't an M3, but it's not supposed to be.

If there was one defining attribute, it is that this car feels as solid as a bank vault. It's not a sports car, and obviously you could add thousands of dollars of superfluous options, but if you want a really nice, safe and comfortable SUV.... think X5. The perfect compliment to your M car

Sounds like the dealership strategy is working.

I really liked the X3 despite its size. I can only imagine how much nicer an X5 is.

lol... I know. Nah, they are just a bunch of good guys down there. This particular X5 was due to go into service in the loaner fleet, I happened to be customer number next this morning. There is something special about putting the first hundred miles on a fresh new car. You always feel as though someone is going to hit you.

I think if the dealer had a Msport with Adaptive M or better yet a DHP suspension, you would be blown away and sell your M3. Seriously..

Yup that's why I paired my M4 with an X5.

When I had my E70 X5, they gave me an F15 50i. Wow.

Weird that this thread was moved to the X5 boards. These guys already know what it's like to drive an X5.

I know they are great cars. I had a '12 X5 M sport with the adaptive suspension and full leather comfort seats. It was a really nice car.

That said, there is no way I'm trading my M3 for an X5. The M3 is a world class car, especially in comp pack guise.

agreed, good car. But have you driven an E70 X5 though?

What's funny is, back in 2012, my M3 was in dealer servicing all day. They gave me a X5d loaner to drive around. A full day with the X5 convinced me to buy one when time comes.

Lord and behold, in 2015, I bought a E70 X5d as my family car. (still have the M3)

To clarify, I'd love to have a X5 as a DD/compliment to my M3, but not replace the M3.

I'm torn...I have a E70 X5 and a E90 M3. I DD the E90 M3. But on weekends, regardless whether I need to haul my family around, I am choosing the X5 over the M3.

It's just a much easier and friendly city car to drive.

M3 and X5

I too have an e90 M3 and an X5. My new to me '16 X5 50i w/ DHP, B&O, HUD, MSport, Night Vision, etc... is the vehicle that I go to for DD, road trips, etc.. The M3 is an amazing drive and for me, a Formula 1 fan who longs for the NA engines, the S65 is something really very special.
But damn is the X5 50i effortless. In practical terms (I dont have access to a track so lets not go there) it is faster then my M3 in that it just breezes to 85-90 without the slightest attempt. With its hookup off the line it can really get going to 65 in a hurry. But I am not a teenager obsessed with printed 0-60 times. Rather I just gush over the visceral qualities of the e90M. The solid clunks of the DCT and the MPE noises - definitely feels like a retro car (already). They are obviously very different vehicles - but as a guy who likes to have a cooler of good beer under the cargo cover for after ride bench racing w friends while sitting on the super comfortable tailgate (mountain bike on the hitch rack) its sort of hard to not always grab the X5 keys.
Horses for courses... but I am likely to replace my X5 with whatever replaces the F15 50i - not interested in replacing the e90 with the F80. Probably just changing priorities.
