electric motor sound when unlocking / opening door.

When I unlock or open a door - there is a pronounced electric motor sound that runs for about 5 seconds. sounds like it is coming from the back half of the car. If I were to guess it sounds like a motor that would retract running boards or something (maybe related to rear cargo cover that I dont have in vehicle). (Not the sound of a tiny servo motor but something meaty). I have MSport so dont have lower step bars - doubt BMW would leave this motor there. I think it is related to a cool feature that I have not yet figured out.

Only have had the vehicle for 2 months so have not figured this out yet - thoughts?

Do you have M adaptive suspension/rear air suspension? My X5 makes the same noise and I think it has something to do with the rear air suspension but I could be wrong.

Maybe - sounds like something bigger then that. A very pronounced electric motor sound for 3-4 seconds. Seems a Fuel Pump would be more subtle... maybe not tho???

turboawd is correct. It is your fuel pumps being primed sound.

Just wondering is it every time we unlock the door, we should hear the fuel pump? Sometimes the car sits overnight but I don't hear anything the next morning when I unlock.

I don't hear that all the time. I guess it really depends on what fuel pressure in the system before you open the door. Many other brand cars have the fuel pump running after you insert and turn the key.
