Regarding plug-in cover on the 40e

Hi guys,

I just saw my 40e in person today and noticed that the plug in cover (bottom part where the car body curves in) is not flush with the car body, so i told the rep. The BMW rep told me that many customers had brought up this topic and its a known issue for them as it comes from factory like that and nothing they can do. I would like to clarify to see if anyone else is having this so called “issue”?

I will post a picture once i get back home tomorrow

Thank you

Yes!

It bugged me at first but I let it go...
The XC90 has a far more slicker design.

I know that there was a thread somewhere of a guy who got it fixed but it involved removing the wing, removing the charging ring and adjusting the springs on the catch...

Not worth it in my opinion + it's quite possible they make it worse afterwards...

Can you post a picture of yours, I’m curious too see to how serious is yours. Yes i agree, its just not worth the trouble. But can i just bend the bottom part of the cover slightly by force instead?

Zoom in and have a look and comment if mine is too serious or normal?

I'll post one if I get a picture.
No bending possible. This is a solid piece of plastic which will probably break if you add force.

This picture is normal. I think mine is even slightly worse.

I cannot even think what is BMW thinking, how they let such a design flaw affect the looks of such a sexy car. Ok, i’ll wait for your photo, but pls do take it from roughly the same angle as i took mine

My plug in cover is off by a mm or so too. On my car, where the A pillars meet the front quarter panels it's off by as much as 2-3 mm! BMW's manufacturing tolerances for this car leaves a lot to be desired. I just let it go, life is too short.

The plug in cover is more serious on the bottom, the bottom part is off more than 1mm thats for sure, the upper parts still good.

The one you mentioned is it where i circled red?

I picked up 40e over the weekend. Will check tomorrow when I get home, currently travelling for work.

QQ- I notice my 40e goes to Max eDrive on every restart. Shouldn't it default to Auto eDrive on every restart? Have you guys did any coding to 40e?

I think the same and regret that I didn't ask the dealer to remove them when picking up mine. Now, I got to DIY if possible.

Mine in Black color isn't that noticeable.

I have the same problem in where you circled. My '15 X5 had the part titled/lifted in both sides. My '18 X5 has, too.

I've done the following coding on my 2017 40e:

5 blink lane change
Temperature with air pressure
door handle lights on reverse
side mirrors close and open with alarm
disabled seat belt chime/alert
close rear gate with remote
display full text/email while in motion

There may be more that I can't remember off the top of my head. As far as the charger door, I'll check tomorrow to see if mine sticks out at all.

Forgot to tell the dealer, but the car is still with them, calling them tomorrow to remove all the emblem except for the X5 on the back.

You had to program opening the rear taligate with the remote? My 2017 35d and 40e, came this way from the dealer. There is even a tailgate open button on the fob. Am I missing something? :-o

no, but you have to program "close tailgate with remote" ... at least in the USA it is normally disabled

That's it. The quarter panel is lifted by about 2-3 mm.

We have the same with our Black e40, looks like it was never closed properly. We pretty done with x BMWs, this our 2nd thinking by moving to the X5 from the most useless put together X3 we had, quality will step up to what we experienced with BM all the years with them, but not at all, even worst considering the price difference between the X3 and X5.
Our car had to go in 3 months after delivery, the boxing unit with the seat switches came off, apparently the screw in the inside was faulty and simply broke.
The dashboard area near the passenger vents is not in line by a good eye soar broken line, it is in your face and only expected maybe from 20k car not 90k one, simply shocking.
When I rest my arm on the door, you feel the seeking and how empty on the inside that cover is.
Not sure about the non x cars, like the new 5, but seriously considering time to move to other brands, BMW is certainly on the way down, volume was never in favour of quality.
