In the parts catalog for the M50d, this is part 6, and you need part 7 (clip) to fit it.

Interestingly, there is an option to have a half open grille on both left and right ! (check parts 4 and 5 in the list below )

I am not sure on which model this will be standard ? On the X5 M ?
My guess is that the half open grille on the left is for right-hand-drive models...
Correct the m50d has half open on opposite side than US x5. 50i

I don't think from a technical perspective that makes sense. Apart from the steering being reversed inside the motor compartment, all the rest is still in the same place

I guess they don't switch the turbo to the other side ??

I checked both the UK and Australian websites, but they have left hand drive pictures. And in the car configurator in the UK, they have altered the front bumper with Photoshop !

I don't see a difference but of course this is only based on the pictures in the different configurators....

Anyone who has one of these 2 cars can confirm this ?

If you live in the USA, see of your dealer can order from the european parts catalog. If he can't, find a nice guy in Europe who can order it for you and ship it

I will ask my BMW dealer for price...

Not sure what you mean with OP, but yes, I started the tread on TJA
Not everyone is an English native speaker

Most of Europe is RH drive as well, except for UK, IRL, Scotland & Wales.

Anyway, I saw you mentioned luxury line but I tought this tread was about the M Sport ? bumper is different from other lines...The 2.5 sd in non M Sport outfit even has both sides closed... Guess the 4 cilinder turbo doesn't any extra air ???

Get's very confusing ( and late....)

Sir
You are correct, thus thread is M Sport. Thus my comments do not apply to this thread. OP, I googled that today, Original poster. I guess I was the cause for the confusion. My apologies.

Is there a technical reason why one side is open and the other closed? I know my 50i is like this but seem to recall the msport 35i having both closed. Visually having both sides open with the aluminum accent strip is preferred just want to ensure performance isn't affected if I opt to order an open intake for the drivers side. (USA spec) to match the open passengers side.

Excl means you have to add 21% VAT in this lovely tax hungry country of ours.

I will probably test this out when my car gets delivered...

I think you'll need two sets of lock rings. One for each side.

According to the main parts catalog it looks like the mirror caps are just provided primed, and are then painted (primed part is L - 51 16 7 365 113, R - 51 16 7 365 114).

Check out this picture of a X5M.

Both vents in the front bumper are open, and behind it there appears to be some kind of radiator.

So I suppose the reason open and closed vents exist is based on the engine configuration, and who knows, maybe even on general climate of the country where you buy the car (closed in colder regions, open in warm regions ? )

Going to guess that they cover up as much as possible to lower the drag cf, then open as needed for larger intercoolers (5.0, M50d one side and both for X5M).

I imagine the only thing that would suffer from opening the space up would be mileage and top speed... but the difference would likely be negligible.

I'm not an expert on drag cf (I should have paid more attention in those aerodynamics courses 20 years ago.. ), but it would seem to me that a flat, closed surface creates more wind resistance than an open one where the air can flow through.

You could be right, I don't know.

Maybe they cover it up because the emplty space behind it is ugly

Anyway, I ordered the parts (both open vents and the M50d chrome line) and will have them installed as soon as my car gets delivered. If it's ugly, I can still put he original parts back on. I will post pictures of before and after as soon as I have them...but don't hold your breath, my car only get's delivered end of Jan.

I think "flow" is a bit optimistic for what happens to air after it enters any opening in the bumper. Any trapped, turbulent air will be worse off than air forced around the front end.

Take a look at any low cf cars (i8 for one) and you'll see very few openings in the bumper, if not needed (closed grills where there's no radiator, etc).
