Impressive that you managed to get yours so quickly, Rene. Must be an allocation issue. I'd imagine there not to be that many orders for the diesel version. Mine is a xDrive50 ordered in mid-November and begun production about a week ago. It finished yesterday according to my salesperson and should be here in about 3 weeks. I absolutely cannot wait!!!

"In the body shop"
Any added insight on the significance of this info and what it means for actual shipment to my dealer?
The automated website response says my car is "in the body shop" and scheduled for completion in two days. I get sort of mixed responses when I talk with a person. My car went to the "in production" status on February 5th, and now is supposed to be completed February 14th, which is one day later than I was told yesterday. It is about a 670 mile drive from Spartanburg plant to my dealer. Any educated guesses as to when the car will arrive at my dealer? Of course, I can call dealer, and they seem to be given a lot more info than is available on website or through customer service at BMW, just looking for a second opinion in case new inexplicable delays start to emerge.

800 number now says my vehicle is in the paint shop and scheduled for completion tomorrow, which is Sunday. This matches what my dealer said as well. Not sure if they are working Sunday, but, again my dealer says that if it is finished Sunday and he would have it and prepped and ready to deliver to me by end of week. Getting close, just thought I would add this details for anyone else waiting. Sounds like everyone's experience is a little different.

On the way to my dealer!
The BMW automated response was behind this morning, but my car was apparently finished on Sunday and delivered to the carrier. The website went from "Production Begins," to "Finishing Touches" all at once. So, in my case the time from being told production started to completely finished and ready to ship was 11 days. At least one of those days the plant was closed because of the storm. My experience was that the best source of information was speaking to person at BMW at the end of each day.

My car shows up as "Order Documented" and the image is still a Carbon Black X5 as opposed to Alpine White, which is what the order was changed to weeks ago. It only displays vehicle-specific options/colors once Production Begins, which can be too late to spot any errors. Thankfully I double and triple-checked my vehicle detail printout from my CA and noticed my roof rails were ordered as satin aluminum and not gloss black. Had I not seen this, I would have not known and would've ended up rejecting delivery of the car. I suspect (and hope!) my image will change once my car starts production and the site updates. I do technology for a living and have been privileged to be part of some of the best app development teams around. It's not that hard to do a better job of this. BMW *has* the data. There's no reason why they can't: - update more frequently - display a build date/week, even if it is subject to change - display order configuration before it's too late - display current status, like Body Shop, Paint Shop, etc. - display shipping carrier/vessel name for vehicles coming to the US - display estimated departure dates - display estimated VPC processing times - be honest about any delays - etc., etc. It's also funny that Track My BMW still has a step for "en route to the US" even though the car is built here. (I checked the source code though and in the JS script that runs the site, they do account for this - but not sure when/if it will change.) I'm always partial to more data than less, and I can imagine BMW wanting to help their stores out by providing up-to-date information rather than having their CA's tied up tracking this stuff all the time. I know I annoy my CA and while he understands it, my calls keep him from other customers. When I bought my Tesla over the summer, the Tesla Owner's Portal had all of this information (minus shipping) since their entire CRM is built on Salesforce/Force.com and they leverage the hundreds of APIs to pull this data. There was also a time (and might still be true) where X3 owners could actually download a video of their car being built and going through assembly. I think that would be awesome for all cars, not just the X3. The whole assembly process is automated from a tracking and logistics perspective. Adding cameras wouldn't be hard. What's sad is that some fellow enthusiasts and I who all worked in tech/ux/ui actually wireframed this concept and practically built it for BMW years ago and offered it to them free of charge, since we were constantly buying cars and dealing with the same thing. BMWNA were ecstatic and then it went nowhere. Oh well.

I'm pretty jealous that the X3 owners can watch their car being built. I'd love that feature for the X5.
My 35d was ordered 12/7, took over a dealer allocation, went into production 2/7, and I confirmed PCD for 3/6 today. I never dreamed of owning a car like this so I'm really excited to get to do the full delivery experience. |
