Add quart of oil

So on Thursday afternoon, my car dings to tell me that my oil level is low and add one quart

I have about 5500 on the odometer so I don't think much about it and add a quart. Yesterday, less than 24 hours later, my car gives me the same warning. This time, I go into idrive and have the car check the oil levels again. Sure enough, the results say add one quart.

I pull over at a gas station, fill up the tank and buy some oil. As I'm about to pour another quart into the engine, I hesitate and decide to take another measurement.

I go back into the car and check the oil level again but his time, it says it's full. This freaking system almost had me overfill the engine with oil! Does the car store these warnings as they do with error codes so I could have proof I'm not imagining this?

I'm not sure about storing warning message but maybe the oil monitoring system needed to take a while to measure the new oil levels. Or it may take certain amount of mileage driven before the oil level gets up to date.

Brought it to dealer to check out and get oil change

SA said as far as e knew, warnings are not stored like error codes. Was told that it's possible that computer didn't reset itself after I added oil. I have issue with this because the warning went off after I added the quart so it gave me a new warning the next day. Had I followed the directions of the message, I would have overfilled the engine with an extra quart of oil. Should permanent damage occurred due to overfilling, I would have zero evidence to prove the car itself is to blame.

The electronic BMW oil fill/level thing is one of the worst things ever and is noted across the whole range of cars. When it tells you to add a quart, you should only go in quarter-quart or half at most increments and check measurements at a later time. Luckily, you did the right thing. There are lots of people overfilling their BMW's with oil when these messages come up.

the only "dipsticks" are the engineers who've taken them out. to answer your question, no.

I was about to say.. i think Diesel models have them.

I am now a dipstick, and should preface that I have the gasoline N55 motor (as well as the guy I was responding to). Thanks guys for making me a dipstick.

This. Definitely this.

Although, if you are anywhere close to an oil change, I would probably just drive around half a quart low until the oil change.

My 2015 X5 5.0 and 09 135 have NO dipstick. Never had to add oil to either one.

I made a habit of checking the oil levels on my M3 once a week and could see the gradual drop in oil level.

I check the oil level on the X5 maybe once a month and have never seen the level drop so I was surprised to see it needing one quart. The 2nd quart 24 hours later really threw me. Glad I hesitated

Having to add oil or not depends on different things.. Your driving habit, stop and go traffic for instance.

The diesel has a conventional dipstick
