MSport & Stone Chips

Washed the X5 this past weekend, and sure enough, the F15 MSport is just as susceptible as the E70 MSport when it comes to stone chips along the painted flares/side skirts. Anyone experiencing the same?

My previous E70 wasn't an MSport but had the SAV pack, so I didn't have to worry about it. My understanding with the E70 MSport was that some folks were able to have BMW repair the damage and BMW would then apply film to protect any future damage. Wonder if we can be so lucky with the F15? Strange how the protective film isn't applied from the factory, like it is with my M4

Yes, this is a known issue with most vehicles and X5 with flared quarter panels, skirts, and fenders.
I would say it's a cost issue applying these from factory

My X5 has this problem as well. I am pretty sure none of the the BMW dealers in my area will warranty this.

I was about to order wheel spacers but after noticing this, I am glad I decided against it!

It really isn't that excessive. With blk you see everything. I'm beginning to get the same with my SG and only 3500 miles on the clock. The winter doesn't help

I drove it up to Tahoe while snowing. The sand and dirt from I-80 caused it. First and only trip this year.
Total drive time in the snow was roughly 1 hour. When I came back and had the vehicle detailed, I noticed the chips right away.

I took two Tahoe trips with the X5 this year. There was lots of gravel, especially during the cold period in early Jan (0 to -20F). I have mud flaps / mudguards on all fours. Still, I got one tiny chip on one side. Otherwise, without flaps, I would have had the same.

They are ugly, especially in the rear (which works on m sport, though catalog says not), but they do the job.

sidenote....going to Tahoe, at least with the diesel, whether in Comfort or Sport, it is always in the right gear and the climb is truly effortless.

6 layers of nano-ceramics applied straight after delivery. Stone chips got nothing on me to date (touch wood) after 8 months. I'm in for a "refresh" detailing this/next month.

i have one or two chips on the front spoiler and one annoying in the hood, just beside the BMW badge... also have a small crack in the window that for Shure will grow....Its always the same story, the car feels brand new for about 1 month then you starting to realize you have a used car

I found the only way to really protect those vulnerable areas such as the wheel arches and rocker panels is to have paint protection film applied. When I have PPF applied to my cars, I always have the installer do the wheel arches, rocker panels, and rear bumper in addition to the full hood.

You can add a great deal of inexpensive protection by installing the front mud flaps

+1. I am disappointed this is occurring with the F15s...was hoping it was an E70 phenomenon that has been solved. My black X5M was hammered at 10k miles, and it had warranty paint done to rockers and flares as a result. Want to avoid that this time around, off to my PPF guy I go.....

In my opinion the paint protection film is the way to go. Wide wheels will wreak havoc on the fenders and associated areas with debris.

And that's how i see it....Battle scars. Best way to prevent dings and chips would be to keep it garaged at all times.

Took mine to big bear a few weekends ago and got my 1st chip on the rear quarter panel.

Found some chips today after the car had been brutally "hit" by all the snowy stuff. Sands, dirts, and gravels, plus the snowmelt/sand/salt distributed by snowplow trucks.

Has anyone ever stayed in the car when the snowplow trucks passed by? It's like the string of bullets hitting your armor...

I feel you... I once had a snow plow gouge the door panel and front fender once with the Snow removal blade. I now park my cars in my garage and avoid the streets as much as possible. I guess when I get my Msport I will need to add PPF on mine as well. Does anyone know the approx. cost of getting this done inducing the front and hood?

So I went to several BMW dealers in my area ( Total 6 ) and every used Msport X5 I've seen had the road debris damage to the flares and side skirts. Can all the Msport owners here please inspect yours and let us know if you have this problem?

Please also note your total mileage, if your X5 is AWD or RWD, and the wheel setup is staggered.
I suspect that the RWD version will not have any issues because the problem here is that the front tires are kicking the road debris onto the rear flares and skirts causing the chips.

Thanks!

Yes, I have the dreaded MSport stone chips (I'm the OP of this thread)
4200 miles
AWD w/20" staggered setup
