BMW keypad, not the best quality!

Yesterday I took a closer look at my keypad for the x5 and noticed that it was pretty worn, comparison photo between keypad to an E92 bmw 6 years old and the new X5 keypad 10 months old, pretty crappy build!

My E90's keys looked new since 10/06 to 01/15. Little over seven years but this is not a good outlook hopefully on how the rest of the X5 is built as well.

It should not be like that. Terrible.

Meanwhile, preventative and cheap solution:
$7

That’s a pretty good idea, the OEM keypad is expensive.

Those are way cute. They'd make an already fabulously heavy key heavier though. Maybe not by a lot, but still.

Silicone....very little weight. They are not slippery-smooth and grip really well so less chance of a drop (I know I ordered one, but at first I ordered it for the wrong key and not a perfect fit...have not re-ordered). For men carrying keys in front pocket jeans, it seemed the key did not want to leave the pocket alway.

I think these will collect dust pretty fast, I had a silicone case on a phone once, never again. Dust or not, I would probably get one of these if I had a red or orange or blue car, to go with the color (another thing that bugs me my Top View not showing the color of my vehicle). Grip is nice, but I want smooth removal and insertion to pocket when I am carrying my briefcase or laptop bag and other stuff. I'd curse pretty bad if the silicon tugged in my pocket and did not want to come out easily.

For those who are leasing, I think you'll be fine with one for 3 years. paicapo 's key looks like an exception, as if it fell and got dragged on the floor, or rubbed against some sandpaper in his pocket.

Interesting. My keyfob is all silver and still looks new, but I don't even use it much since I use the comfort access...

Uh, protection for something pretty. You would loose the feeling and satisfaction.
I guess it is time for CA retrofit.

You could definitely go with that and win the the pickiest person ever contest. At least BMW should give us an option, right? Did you ever look int coding, maybe we can upload a jpeg or something.

It's the great ideas for some, but IMO, I just hate it. I don't use any cover on the key fob or iPhone, etc. Why covers such beauty insides the cover!?

I haven't found anything with images/coding. If I did, I'd redesign the whole 6WB and iDrive myself better than Audi because I have experience in themes and photoshop/gimp. Trust me...I've looked. I'm pretty sure if I changed it, I'd get a legal notice from BMW the way Deadmau5 got from Ferrari for changing his Ferrari 458 Italia into a Purrari...which made him move onto a Lamborghini Huracan and call it the Nyanborghini Purracan.

Here's some of my work from back in the day when I used to play around with themes for the first google phone (g1): http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=3150

After a few accidental tailgate openings from the keys being in front jeans, I got covers. Fortunate that tailgate did not scrape against garage door. With cover protectors no repeated occurrences. Yes it is very bulky and does not come out of tight pants readily. The rubber bands aren't pretty but prevents the cover from swinging open. With comfort access, no need to push buttons.

Oh it is ugly alright. It is a damage preventer and ugly plus loss of feel as R33 points out.

I know I read somewhere that condoms prevent minivans, but I'm sorry bro, that's just wrong....

Here's what the dealership gave me to help protect the keyfob:

It's actually one of their better in-house products - the clasp has a built in magnet and thus the overall dimensions are quite thin and being faux leather, it doesn't "stick" to my pants' pocket unlike how silicon would.
