I can fill up in 5 min and more importantly x5 drives and handles a lot better IMHO.

But yes, in the long run, I also will succumb to EV. Just not Tesla. It will be same BMW X5, but with EV

lol after 130? Maybe if i were only buying for the track. I live in socal....130 is a pipe dream. Going from 50-100.....thats something i can use. Not trying to compare the cars...like apples and oranges. I just sold my x5 and on the fence with the new X5 coming out or the model X. Wife loves her model S. I will wait to see how the new X5 looks.

A Tesla could do 0-60 in a second (or any other EV-brand car) and I'd still take a V8. No rumble, no fun!

Dealer has a threshold - 1 qt per 700 miles - if you exceed that - then you need to worry, otherwise it's normal
How accurate is that figure? My 50i engine was replaced 2yrs ago and remember seeing the insurance bill around $27-30k

Agreed. Drove a Tesla once...just felt like a go kart and missed the sound of a V8

Before labor and fluids: BMW Part # 11-00-2-327-478, SHORT ENGINE for $29106.64
I would suspect a reman one would be less and a used one would be the cheapest.

Only 3 months since my last top-off and DING! goes the low oil warning. But I went on a 600+ mile road trip in December for the holidays though so makes sense.

How many miles did you put on before the need for two quarts? I never got the warning only because I check my oil level every couple weeks and added oil when it was about a quart low , I used that one quart in about 3200 miles so not to bad.

I had BMW do an oil consumption test on my 5.0 (about 22K miles on clock) and the motor used a bit less than a full quart in 1200 miles. I did go over the official 1000 miles which the test calls for. Apparently that's within specs.

11295 mileage to be exact..2 quarts..I don't drive the 50i a lot if you're wondering why the car is in such low mileage. I have another car

Newbie here
I got my x5 a couple of weeks back
It’s not new
Has 16k kms or 10k miles
First run today of about 80 miles
DING! I need 2 quarts please
I rang BMW Roadside Assistance
The guy said check the dipstick and add half a quart at at time
I added a quart of shell helix ultra 5w-40 which he recommended
Still looking for the dipstick
Tomorrow another 80 mile tun
I’ll check the electronic oil level measuring gizmo to see what level we have

Thanks for the info guys
It’s so heartening to know this is normal.

There is no dipstick, you have to check it electronically.

Car made July 2017.
WRT dipstick ....the guy at the end of the official BMW Roadside Assistance connection...the number you ring from in iDrive....did tell me he was not a technical person and he tried very hard to help which he did since all I wanted was the type of oil to add....
Despite the dipstick I'm happy.
When I get back to the big smoke no doubt the service manager will confirm there is no dipstick and be sceptical since the motor thinks no service is needed for another 10k miles.

Thanks chaps

Ps if the car asks for 2 quarts do you give it two quarts? Or a lesser amount?

If you look there are incremental lines , if I recall when I added oil to mine between one line to another was about a quart. I did not wait for the warning as I checked every once and a while, mines was down one and half lines so I put in a quart and a half and when I checked it was right at max level. You can always add one quart and recheck it and then see where it stands and repeat adding a little more again hth.

Mine always reads full and I change oil at 7500 miles. Never had a top up warning in the 20000 miles I’ve owned it.

Figured I'd dig up this thread.

My car has been eating more oil now than before. It didn't consume any oil from new to maybe 22,000 miles.

I got a transmission fluid change at 50,000 miles at the dealer who also did a "PPI" for me, while they dropped the transmission, they found that my rear crankshaft seal was leaking oil... Also apparently my oil pan gasket was leaking oil as well. Go figure.

The dealer had to drop the transmission to change the transmission fluid?

I had to add two quarts at the start of a July trip that accounted for 3.5K miles. I think the odometer was at 35K miles.

All the fluids were checked by dealer prior to the trip. I called my SA to make certain I was getting the correct oil. The timing was not good because I was fighting Atlanta traffic and dressed for solemn occasion.

I have no idea that’s what they told me. I told them to empty the torque converter as well perhaps that’s why? But they did at least bill BMW for the seal.

In the past when I did my own changes I’ve never had to drop the transmission.

They also checked my valve stem seals no problems there. I guess maybe our cars not burning oil just leaky.
