Painted Exhaust Tips Holding up?

I'm planning to paint my exhaust tips black soon and I'm curious how it's holding up for folks that have had this done for awhile.

When did you paint your tips? How are they looking currently? Have you had to respray them?

TIA

I painted mine last summer and they began to crack and chip. I recently just had them powder coated

What prep did you do? What paint? I bought the VHT engine enamel.

I've had positive results on mine with the same VHT engine enamel spray paint. Also sanding the chrome with 4 coats of gloss and 4 coats of clear coat. about 10 minutes of drying time inbetween coats.

For your viewing pleasures..

Looks great, how well are they holding up? How long ago did you paint them?

Had them painted in February last year 2017 and it was perfectly fine and glossy as of August 2017 until I was rear ended and I had to have my rear bumper and exhaust tips replaced. I haven't had a chance to redo them. I feel like the paint would hold up very well.

Sounds like the trick is to go with a bunch of layers. Thanks for the tips!

I just cleaned and prepped my tips, I have the vht gloss black and clear coat, but I forgot to order the primer, should I. Hold off and get the primer before I paint?

Myself and most here did not use a primer and its been a couple of years the tips are holding up well. To me the prep before paint was most important and it looks like you have done a good job at that

Just make sure that you sand the bends and corners especially well as those points are the first to peel.

I sanded mine, cleaned, prepped, primed, painted with VHT. They still chipped and flaked off within a year. Going powder coat next time.

I've had to re-do my tips twice now after the corners chipped within 4-6 months. I think it's primarily due to the harsh New England weather but I could be wrong. The huge swings in temps and salt from the road just kill the finish.

The second time around I used 2 coats of VHT primer, 4 coats of VHT gloss black engine paint, 2 coats of VHT clear coat. Only difference from the first attempt was adding in the primer, and it still didn't help. I will also say there is nothing worse than stripping the paint off to re-do the job.

I've heard mixed reviews from the forum, however it seems most of the positive long duration reviews come from warmer climates. Has anyone honestly made it through 2 winters with a single application?

I am taking a new approach and will reveal my results in the coming weeks

Sneak preview - cutting off my stock tips and welding on new OEM powder coated ones. Only option for the 50i for powder coating.

Will cost me around $250 all in but well worth it to never walk up to my car again and see a huge chip missing. My father in law gave me sh*t once after seeing the corners chipped - said it looked cheap and my head exploded. Maybe because he's my sworn enemy?
