I hope he's wrong about that too but I'm afraid he might not be. From some of the stuff I've read so far about the G05, the diesel is still questionable for the US. We'll see... Of course with VAG and MB out of the diesel market, one would think BMW could capture quite a few of their diesel customers so this would be a lost opportunity for BMW if they also exit the diesel market now.

hahaha... so true. this is one of the many reasons so many have a negative opinion on diesel these days (pre-scandal) along with the clouds of diesel smoke and cold start issues etc.

I have to imagine it was because of the size of the motor but also because this was not a typical diesel engine. It was not legal in all 50 states and it did not use any adblue additives. It had a regenerating filter which let out a huge plume of white smoke when it regenerated after every thousand miles or so but I do not remember exactly.

Mazda is also rumored to be introducing diesel to the US market starting with the CX-5.
I am only guessing but if their competition is any indication of the future (which it usually is among the german marques) you can bet bmw will move away from it and put emphasis on their e-Drive variants.

The others you mentioned are introducing them but they're always late to the game and there are rumors already of Ford being the next ones suspected of rigging ECU and other components for diesel. LR/RR also is late to the game with a diesel motor and very few people here want them and why they brought out the hybrid. The RR TD6 loses value rapidly and has hardly any demand here. Lastly diesel motors for rural areas or pick-ups isnt new and that market is not who i am referring to and who audi, bmw, mb or lr/rr cater to. Volvo who is no stranger to diesel motors didn't even bother with one on the new XC90 and only offered the 4cyl models and a hybrid.

I have looked my 2015 Service and Warranty Information booklet. For 35d, only Catalytic converter, SCR and DPF are covered under 8 years/80,000 miles (page 25) under Federal Emission Defect and Performance Warranties. California Emission Warranty has long list of components to cover, most for 7 years/70,000 miles and some for 8 years/100,000 miles, but they only cover about 10 states.

It was about 8-9% of the CPO inventory available nationwide when i was buying in Dec so i’d guess close that

Good news- it looks like the diesel will be back as the 40d for the 2019 model.

I’m considering the 35d right now. I drive mostly in the city, and my 50i barely gets me 700km(430miles) per tank.... I hope we can have m50d on next generation....

Wow, really do hope this is true! I wonder if it will be the same 35d engine, just tuned and called 40d? BMW has told me in the past, it is expensive and difficult to get new diesel engines certified in the USA (several states, not just CA, are very stringent)!

Garage List
2016 BMW M3  [0.00]
So I'm kinda the odd one out. I had a 13 X5d and then a 15 X5d. The 15's lease is up in April so I debated getting another diesel or switch to the gas. I loved both but am going to get a 35i this time.
There are a couple of reasons for this. First it is a third car for me and my wife so it gets part time duty, maybe 10k miles per year(if that), and it will driven primarily by her and a little by me on the weekends. Originally I wanted the diesel because I was going to tow a trailer. That has not transpired the way I thought it would so I dont need that anymore either. We also had an ongoing unresolved issue with the AC compressor in the 15 which I believe is heat soak related so that was a minor consideration as well. One other minor thing was the 21" wheels which I like were not available in the configurator on the diesel.
We are also purchasing this time versus leasing as my wife likes to keep her cars a lot longer than I do. Now that it's a 3rd car and I dont have to drive it much, plus the proven reliability of the N55 I see it sticking around for a long time.
Dont get me wrong, I love my 35d but for numerous reason the 35i made sense this time. The order is getting placed today so it should be here right around the time I have to turn in my 15.
Both engines are a great choice and should be based on your needs.

It's really just personal preference
I drove a 35i at the dealer, didn't have a chance to drive the 35d, but bought one anyway. I chose a Diesel because
- In Ontario diesel prices in the summer are considerably cheaper than premium.
- I generally do a lot of rural driving so I gain in the mileage department. Averaging 8.4L/100km at the moment. Expect that to go down slightly too in the summer.
- I didn't need anything faster than this. I would love to tune this truck. But The minor performance loss over the 35i wasn't an issue for me. The torque makes up for that.

Don't regret it one bit. Both trucks are perfect in their own respects. Choose the one suited to your driving.

As for the smell. I have 0 complaints about the smell. It's not your grandfathers 88' golf diesel. Again thats just me I grew up on a farm, with tractors and diesel trucks. The x5 is far from that.

As for the sound, 0 complaints either. You have to expect it to sound different then a gas motor.. it's a diesel. Unless I tell uninformed people it's a diesel. Nobody knows. It's quiet, Refined. Again in my opinion exactly the way it should sound.

Drive both. And choose. Like everyone has said, you won't be disappointed with either, just get an m sport..

I wanted a x5d but for my wife the very very minor smell was enough for her to say no 35d and we ended up with a 35i

I have no regrets with 35i if the m50d was available in Canada I might have had to put my foot down

Nothing to certify. The engine is already in the 5 series in the US as the 40d. 3.0 liter 265HP, 457 lb. ft. torque.

35d for sure

This is our second diesel first was a 2011 335d. Sold it with 200000km. Never had any issues with the diesel or components(outside of 80000km warranty). That was a fun car. This X5 is fantastic. Great overall, torkey, reliable great on fuel. We get -40c here and I trust the Bmw diesels more then our f150 to start in the cold.

I highly doubt you get 700km a tank driving in the city in the 50i. I get 650 km per tank driving mostly highway in the 35i.

Does ecomode in long distances create more soot?
I heard u need to be 2.5k rpm to push soot out
