In the past, I bought the glass from a dealer parts store and had the installer pick it up from the dealer and install it. Or I offered to pay the price difference, usually $50 or so.

Arrrrrgh! I read this thread the other day and felt fortunate that I hadn't needed a windshield replacement in my X5.
So of course, guess what happened today? We were driving from NJ to our son's home in Vermont and as soon as we got on Route 4 in Vermont WHACK!....... the car 200 feet ahead must have kicked up a stone and put a chip in the windshield. I've already called USAA and Safelite's coming to the house on Monday to repair it. I think they'll be able to seal it. - the chip is close to the HUD display.

I took mine to Safelite which was Geico's repair network. Here a pix of the glass damage before the fix. It's right smack in the middle of my windshield about 12 inches below the front camera sensor, etc.

I am in New Jersey and have Liberty Mutual and there is zero deductible on glass which is great. They are very well aware that OEM is the only glass for HUD equipped vehicles.

Been a lurker for a while and finally time to make a post. I need to replace my windshield on my 2014 X5 as a road raging motorcyclists punched my hood this morning and the tiny rock chip in my lower windshield cracked to almost a foot long from the impact he made.
Debating if this is a claim to make through insurance or not as I worry about my premium going up. Did anyone have this happen? A police report was filed if I went this route. Also, I see safelite gave a quote of roughly $600 and I am seeing BMW charges about $1500 or more for a replacement. I have the HUD so I obviously want to make sure it is compatible. Do I have to ask Safelite for an estimate for OEM specifically? Any help is appreciated |

bumping this for a quick question.
6 months left on lease. $500 deductible with Allstate to do the repair, they send me to Safelite. I don't care too much but this made me question Quote:

Safelite can absolutely do the camera calibration, it involves driving around to do a “dynamic calibration” with their scan tool. |

If you have a indy you go to ask who their glass guy is. I needed rear glass and insurance would not pay dealer (they wanted me to pay the difference) and Safelite would only use OE-like glass (basically same manufacturer with the logo).
The glass shop I contacted told my insurance that the OE glass wasn't the same (it was missing a trim) and my insurance company approved the dealer glass after that.
