Our prior e70 35d with Dinan sport tune set to Race felt like that. Torque is the initial acceleration hit you feel, HP is that feeling sustained. I have ridden in and driven a few well tuned N55s (coupes and sedans) and they pack one hell of a punch.
Unless you have the M50d - Torque 750ft-lbs and three turbos maintain that continual acceleration through all gears.

I believe you means 65-75 mph or speed. The numbers on the instrument cluster are still very impressive, although usually they are over-estimated little bit. What MPGs usually you get on the instrument cluster, we know instrument cluster MPG usually over-estimates about 1-2 miles than actual MPG. Have you calculated your actual MPG? By actual MPG, I means you reset your mile count to 0 on instrument cluster after filling up tank at gas station, at next filling up you use the miles on your instrument cluster to divide the gallons you fill the tank.

Good point about emissions related problems having longer warranty than standard 4yr/50K miles. Besides to look up warranty booklet comming with the vehicle, does anybody know if BMW has updated/new warranty for this?

I forgot to add the key option on our X5 - DHP. I've called it the magic suspension before and it really is. It smooths the bumps and levels it out in the curves. Makes this tall and heavy SUV handle like a dream. I fretted a bit over the cost when we bought it, but now that we've had it for 6 months, it's worth every penny.

When it's time for another car, if it's BMW I'll only get it with DHP. I can't recommend it strongly enough. Diesel AND DHP - what an impressive machine.

There is no point to get an X5 without DHP... These vehicles have been watered down to appease the masses and gain that lexus/acura customer so to get the driver's car feel again it is an option.

Could not have said it any better. Just on the way home tonight took a straight right hander at 35mph with very little body roll. The suburban that was right on my ass finally wasn't so close anymore. 35D with DHP is a win-win every day for me.

Damnit, can this option be retro-fitted?

easier option would be installing a proper coil over suspension and dialing in your ideal dampening levels and height.

I don't think I have DHP on my '17 35d, and I feel it drives and handles amazingly well...perfect combo of sport stiffness and yet supple over bumps and rough roads. My '17 X5 40e felt like a mattress...too floaty and squishy!

35d vs 35i? I think the fact that I'm on my 4th diesel X5 says it all... Not that the 35i isn't a decent SUV. I've driven a few 35i loaners and they were great. But they were not at the same level of great as the diesel version. As for reliability, I don't think I have enough data points from personal experience to comment but from what I've read on this and other forums, it sounds like it's a wash...

OP, I agree with whoever said that you should drive both. That's the only way for you to really know which one is better for you. It did it for me; once I drove the diesel, I knew I was never going back to gas!

If you ever drive a X5 with a DHP then you will understand.
As they say ignorance is bliss.

I chose the 35i for several reasons...

0-60 take off is faster, with MPPK and Chip tunes its fast!
Exhaust sounds much nicer
Smell of diesel bothers me
Don't want to deal with the maintenance issues with EGR and Soot build up

Unfortunately, this is what comes to mind when I think of diesel engines

ah that's rubbish... we're talking about:

in all seriousness i do not know of one x5 or any diesel bmw product which was converted into a coal-roller as pictured above.
that is typically reserved for the pick-ups in rural areas.

Ignorance is bliss on your part too

Have you driven an E70 or F15 X5? 100% zero diesel smell, soot, smoke. Also, the 35i, 50i and even 40e X5s....the exhaust tips turn black after a few drives. 3k miles on my 35d, and I have yet to even have to think about cleaning the tailpipes.....Gleaming clean!!

Smell of diesel bothers me too. The X5 just doesn’t have any. My first diesel was a pre-DPF Silverado 2500hd. It stunk and would blow out soot when it built up in he exhaust. Both my BMW diesels were and are tidy and fresh.

Never had a problem with diesel smell at all, I also use Costco gas stations so they are very nice and clean,no diesel on my hands after refueling.

The only time I smell diesel is an occasional faint whiff on start up in very cold weather. Other than that - nothing, zero, zilch.

So I've just been reading all of the replies and it is really making me think about switching the 35i for a diesel. However, I think I'm going to look at E70s.

Came to post this. Warm weather starts you can smell the tailpipe and there's not a hint of smell. Just crazy.

Really cold weather is another story. It's been below zero here off and on for a couple weeks and on those really cold days, if you have to sit Idling for a little bit, you will smell the exhaust if you get out around the rear of the car or open the rear passenger door. It's the one and only complaint I have with mine.

The E70 is good, but the F15 is fantastic. Different engine and 8 speed vs 6 speed trans make a huge difference.
