I'm thinking it's about time to change my pads and rotors.

Should I go OEM bmw parts or aftermarket? I was looking at Hawk or stop tech cross drilled rotors for looks.

What do you guys think? OEM or other? The non oem do come out much cheaper, Hawks are $350shipped for all 4 corners.

Hawk has better performance than oem pads, so if you want a bit better stopping power and initial bite Hawk is the way to go. Even Porsche guys go with Hawk.
As for rotors - nothing beats oem in terms of durability. However, I went with Stop Tech drilled and slotted rotors just for looks too. Picking them up today and going to install them soon. Will post pics. I'm not expecting them to be as good as oem ones, but close enough is all I need

Do you have 50i or 35i/35d?

If you want to save some $ zimmerman coated is the way to go. I used them on both e70 and f15. I felt almost no difference but a significant improvement. As for brake pads texter seems to produce less dust and decent stopping power. Just note that non oem parts can void ur warranty not sure if that applies to rotors since they are not covered under bmw warranty lol

Yes, warranty is always the risk unfortunately one has to consider. I'm glad I'm almost done - mine ends on March 2018 (free maintenance one)

Everything in Canada seems to good the bmw warranty or just isn't covered by the bmw warranty lol

I'm definitely not worried about that considering I'll even be doing the work myself

I will go for Hawks pad. I have good experience with them. I will also go for aftermarket drilled rotors for the looks.

Does anyone know the rotor thickness minimum? I'm having a hard time finding this value and not sure if the rotors have ever been changed on this vehicle and want to know if it needs done.

Thanks

So for 36mm ones - minimum is 34.4mm for disks and 3.7mm minimum for pads (light indicator should come on at that point for pads)

I got it here: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...kes/1VnYYwj5Wn

So for StopTech rotors - so far I can't notice any difference with oem ones - maybe it's too early to tell, but I think it's a good thing. Well at least StopTech makes bbk too and they are probably almost as famous as Brembo (not really, but almost) - meaning they don't produce right out bad things - they are pretty descent

As for pads: Hawks or Carbotech - both are good pads recomended to improve stopping power over oem pads (carbotech also reduces brake dust)

I'll be installing F85 rotors on front axle instead of my current Stoptech ones and if I was closer to you, I could have just gave it to you for free, they have only like 500 miles on them (just installed them 2 weeks ago), but shipping will be expensive

BTW, before you buy, consider doing same as I did: I bought E70 X5M stock oem Brembo (set of 2 front calipers) for $800 on ebay. They bolt on directly without any modifications. You can paint them any color yourself (very easy to do with VHT caliper paint before you install them). Then you can match them with F85 drilled rotors - 395mm (they go for $320 on bmwpartsnow). You'll have a gorgeous looking bbk for total of $1.4-1.5k - the good thing about it is that you can always sell them later and recuperate money - they are in high demand

I ran this setup on my E46 M3 but with slotted rotors instead of the drilled ones. They were great and I had no issues with them. I put about 20k on them before I sold the car.

Don't worry about the thickness, BMW "NEVER"
reuses the rotors. Always replace them.

Yes, but in order to know WHEN to replace - you need to know remaining thickness lol - that's how BMW checks rotors. It's not like they go randomly and replace rotors on every oil change

P.S. Am I the only one here who follows logic

I just changed my rear pads also (@ 65k km)
My guy used these pads. (http://textar.com/passenger-cars/textar-epad/)
I had them on my Z4 before. Good stopping power and very low dust.

Something strange, My rear brakes needed replacing but the front pads still had lots of life left in it.
Usually, its the front pads that goes first.
Anyone else notice that in their X5?

Exact same here. Our X5s must be seriously rear-brake-biased.
