So the other day my check engine light popped up on the freeway. Car seemed to drive fine but got a message saying "Drivetrain. Maximum power not available. Drive moderately" or something like that. Can't recall exactly. Car has about 96,000 miles on it all recalls have been done. Next day I drove the car and car had no power at low rpm, if you pressed the throttle it would not rev up. I had to feather the throttle and it would start to build rpm's once it got around 2000-2500 rpm it would take off. Basically there was no turbo boost and then the boost just kicked in all of the sudden. Parked the car, next day jumped in and check engine light was off and drove great for 3 days, then came back on and started do the same thing. Put the car on a scanner and got 2 codes P22D3 turbo inlet valve stuck closed and P0473 Exhaust Pressure sensor A circuit high. Put smoke machine on the car no leaks. Vacuum lines seem ok, ran a test on the valve seemed like it's functioning. The electro pneumatic changeover valve is not very expensive but seems to be ok, maybe its bad in the sense that it's not communicating properly with the computer. Turbo is not making any weird noises, seems ok. Anybody have anything similar happen to them. Any input would be appreciated.

Below is what comes back for the first code. Sounds like the vanes of your turbo are stuck.
P22D3 - Charging pressure actuator: Mechanically faulty near closed position The fault is set if the charging pressure actuator is detected as being jammed in the closed position for a certain period of time. Period: 1 s Service Plan: 1. Perform functional check of the charging pressure actuator, check the kinematics of the variable turbine geometry (stiff movement, collision with other components), repair if applicable. 2. If the kinematics of the variable turbine geometry cannot be repaired: Replace turbocharger. This guy had the same code: |

Thanks for the info. It looks like it's gonna be the turbo. Swapped the changeover valve, no vacuum leaks. Spoke with a buddy at BMW dealership. He said usually it's a vacuum leak and if not then the turbo. At my mileage he said it's not uncommon for the turbo to go out. So looks like an upgrade is coming in the near future. Will take the stock one out and check the vnt actuator and the vanes before looking for a swap. Anybody have recommendations for an aftermarket direct swap turbo kit. A little extra power wouldn't be unwelcome but not really looking for that. Thanks.
