Those of you who live in ice/snow conditions what......
Do you plan on doing for snow tires if you are running 20" wheels? I see Pirelli has an option but it's studded, are there any other options? Anyone?

I've started investigating this now as well. I left it too late last year on my truck and all the 20" AT / winter tires were gone by October. Anxious to see what people come back with. I know Pirelli makes a Scorpion Snow & Ice in a RF. Not sure I want to chance not having run flats without a spare.

From what I know, Continental Extreme Contact are one of the best tires on snow. We have a similar tire, the LS20 19", on our '14 MDX and that car handled really amazing even at speeds around 40-50 mph in icy conditions and without slipping on windy roads in snow from 2"-6". I was really impressed by them.

I've been debating this issue with myself. I really like the 20" wheel options but would like all season run flats, but apparently no one makes such a thing. So now I'm thinking of going with the 20" wheels and performance tires and then replace them at some point with all season tires. I would also order the spare tire.
That's where I am today but by the time I place my order (waiting for 2015) I may get the 19" all season, third row seating and no spare. Why can't I have everything I want? |

I'm thinking of getting another aftermarket set of 20" rims and running Toyo Observe GSi-5s on them. I'm still also considering running a 19" winter setup but worried that 255 will look too skinny under the wheel flares. Not many winters available in 315/35/20r sizing.

I run winter summers in everything. Best performance in winter snow and the cost is negligible. Plus you save your summer rims. Bad side is winters look puny in winter

Great responses, unfortunately it need to stay with 20" due to having the BMW Big Brake Kit. I'll look into those Toyo Tires. Thanks everyone for your responses.

Are you sure the big brake kit needs 20-inch? I think I have those brakes in the M5od as standard?? You can have 19-inch wheels on the M50d. I will be running Nokian Hakka 8 SUV 275/40 R 20 (they won all the tests in Nortern Europe last winter and so did the non studded Nokian Hakka R2) studded all around, but I understood you wanted non studded.
I strongly recommend the Nokian Hakka R2 SUV non studded winter tyres as they won virtually every major test in every large magazine last year in Northern Europe. http://www.nokiantyres.com/winter-ty...liitta-r2-suv/ Bmw sells Pirellis as a set: https://www.bmw.de/de/topics/service...ryId=9316.html EDIT: Here is a summary I found of many winter test results (Its Finnish, but you get 1. 2. etc...). http://autohullut.fi/etusivu/2013-ta...-kitkarenkaat/ Last edited by kip1; 05-31-2014 at 06:23 PM.. |

I have to agree with kip1. Nightcreature installed some amazing Nokian Tires on his 22" wheels for his winter setup and had no issues whatsoever. i believe his were studded. You can see them in his thread here: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=923595. I might look into these tires for my next setup. Thanks kip1!

have the same
Have the same. 20" staggered Pirelli Scorpion and Ice. Absolutely fantastic. Was a brutal winter with 10-12" snow drifts that hadn't been plowed and the X5 with the Pirellis never even threw off the traction control light. Phenomenal. Highly recommend.
