1 or 2 Conti DWS

Wife picked up a nail in LR tire. I think I'm okay just replacing the one instead of both rears with only 5500 miles on them, correct? I'm just asking, b/c I know the DWS are rated 50k, but I only get a fraction of that with my 315/35/20s.

On a side note, I replaced my wife's X5 Dunlops with Conti DWS from TireRack at delivery, they included road hazard protection. Read the fine print and Continental Brand tires are not to be repaired and I'm getting a free replacement with shipping. Just need to pay for
m/b. And I was just about to plug it myself

With that rating and 5500 miles down, you should be fine with replacing just 1.

You should be OK replacing one - 5500 is very little wear

Here's what Gary over at TR emailed me:

BMW recommends that the tires be within 4/32nds of an inch of tread depth of each other. My gut feeling would be that you are probably within that range, but you could measure the existing tread depth to be sure. The 315/35R20 DWS starts at 10/32nds, so just confirm that the other rear tire is at 6/32nds depth or higher.

I had to measure the tread depth for the damaged tire for the claim and it was still 10/32. I imagine the other rear tire is nearly identical.

Once again, very impressed with TR's Road Hazard Protection. Called them this morning with my new Conti Order # and the check will be in the mail today!

I was just about to order a set of DWS06 tires, is the tirerack road hazard protection better than discount tires? I usually just get tires at my local discount tire since they will match the price, but I never read the fine print or ever needed to use the road hazard protection.

First time I ever used any sort of road hazard protection. With TR, the road hazard protection is included in their prices. I believe it is extra with DT.

What really surprised me, was that TR's protection states Continental Brand tires are not to be repaired and must be replaced. Even the claims people were taken aback and needed to double check (I found it in the fine print--wonder if they would have informed me had I not informed them--yeah right!). At most, I thought the protection would have just covered the plug/patch. Never thought I would get a replacement tire. Like I mentioned earlier, I was just about to plug it myself, when something reminded me the road hazard protection was included when I bought the tires.

Really interested in gaining your impressions on the new Conti DWS06. Plan to get them once these need replacing.

Be sure to measure the inside, that's wear the wear occurs on our cars. I'd be inclined to plug/patch if the nail isn't on the shoulder...not sure why they would have this limitation, particularly as a non-runflat.

Small world...I see your garage list contains a V60P*. If you were on SS last Fall, I was that guy who unloaded #62. Do I know you?

Small world indeed. My SS era started when yours ended, but your legend continues Can't believe you dumped the uber wagon....the Swede literally broke my streak of 17 consecutive German cars, and I really dig it as my DD.

Legend hardly, but I'm sure folks remember "that guy" over on SS.

Yeah, the car handled great and is a true uber wagon. I talked my wife into it, thinking the size would be fine for our German Shepherd and other utility needs, but we quickly found out it was just too small and we were expecting the best of both worlds--performance/handling and refinement and what we've become accustomed to with Bimmers. Yeah, I'm a BMW fanboy! I was really wanting the V60P* to be my answer to an RS4 Avant (which probably would be too small even if we could get it here). I guess I was comparing it too much to my M4.

Here's a thread I posted here right after I got it and before adding tint:

Well, we have an X5 if we need some more beef to take to Home Depot, so maybe I am not looking at it through the same lens since the P* is an incremental car vs. a direct replacement. It's certainly not an RS4 or M3/4, but it is the best wagon in the US sans the E63 and its budget-busting price. So if anything, by default, I'm very happy with it considering the Audi and BMW offerings. I feel like the X5 has gotten softer and softer...still a great car, and the wife loves it, but not as driver oriented as the E53 4.8is or E70 X5M we had before it. For my personal use, I like the wagon dynamics and "throwback" technology like hydraulic steering and a serious, mechanical suspension. The tranny is probably its Achilles heel..and 8 spd auto or 7spd dual clutch would surely kick it up a notch.

Thanks for the link...great pics!!

Just patch it. That's what I did to mine with 3k miles on the car.

The dealer wouldn't do it but told me about a shop near that would.

It hasn't had an issue. Mine was dead center in the contact tread.

Yes. Learned of his ways painfully this week. Feel free to PM me at anytime, as I would hate for the bmw equivalent of #63 to jump in and rain vague nonsense upon us for hijacking this/your tire thread.

Agree above, just patch your Conti to keep wear consistent

LOL

Yeah, to get back OT...Tire Rack sending me a replacement tire
n/c as part of their Road Hazard Protection which they include on their tires

The point of this Thread was just to make sure I can still get away with 1 tire and not replace both
