It's only for M cars. But, just out of habit and to make myself feel better, I changed the oil myself at 1200.

+1 we took our F15 for a unscheduled interim oil change at 10,000km even though the OBC says it is not due for oil change for another 8,000km or October 2016.

The break-in 1,200 mile service is for M-cars only. Along with an oil change, they "un-lock" the computer to allow the car to make full power. Great idea IMO...avoids the M with 5 miles on it being bagged on from minute one.

If they do it on M cars and RS cars I figure it's a good thing to do. Not needed or paid for per manual on non-m cars.
^ yeah, I've never experienced a reduction, I think I still hit 140mph on the autoB within the first 30 miles of my 1M. That's the only thing I've heard is limited which I cannot be confirmed. |

FWIW. Just did a break-in OC at 2,200 miles. Oil was pretty dark and filthy. Have always changed out oil early in mileage for every BMW owned, and then approx every 5K, regardless of what the OBC service indicator said. Kept most of them well into 100K miles without a single engine problem.

I did break in service. Lots are break in wear and stuff in the oil. Then did service again at 5000, cleaner this time, and at 10k for factory service it's very clean.

Contrary to the many naysayers about the need for this "unneccessary" expense (which I DIY anyways), the only reason BMW dropped the break-in service from their recommended schedule was because they went to a "free" maintenance program for the first few years/mileage starting around year 2000 or so I believe. Once BMW starting picking up the tab, they dispensed with the the break-in oil change and introduced "lifetime" fluids such for such things as transmission, differentials, power steering, and transfer cases.
For leaseholders it's all irrelevant, but for long term owners a conservative maintenance protocol can be very beneficial (and cost effective for DIYers). Ask most experienced techs about what they've seen in their shops over the years.

Seems you need to be easy on a vette for the transmission to break in, brakes not, overheating like that right off the start. Did I buy the car no. Went to another dealer, ordered a 2001 and made the comment no one is to drive this car. Told the story |

I knew on every test drive, the sales guy would tell me, "Go ahead floor it!"
I did end up buying a stock model with like 30 miles, so I knew someone had floored it. But that's okay, because I read somewhere that BMW says these cars eat oil because we don't drive them hard enough from the get-go, so I figured since it's already been done, what's the harm in me doing it. Well like I posted, the first change brought out a lot of stuff in the oil, but subsequent changes have been very clean. And it doesn't really burn oil. |

Its the filters job to collect any foreign debris if any along with any noticeable sized metal shavings.. anything smaller wouldn't harm the engine anyway.. Also IMO unless you're going to keep the car past 100K miles I don't see point in doing this... Lots of this talk of oil changing at break-in is old traditions obviously that is hard to break.
I guess if it makes you sleep better at night, then change it at 300 miles, 500 miles, 900 miles or 1,200 miles or whatever miles it is that you suppose to change the oil at.
