elisiX's Sapphire Black/Mocha Nappa F15 X5 m50d

Hi all,

New to the forum and to BMW ownership. I've spent a little time reading the incredible amount of information on bimmerpost, though I have quite a lot to go before I consider myself an expert. I have however spent a number of years with various Audi's and felt like making the switch for something different.

Being a 33yo with a wife and 14 month old, buying my dream M3 was within reach from a budget perspective, however it was practically not the best choice so I had to reconsider my options. I realised this when at the dealership my wife had to change our little boy, and she very easily popped the back of our Audi open to get down to business. Something which I can't imagine would have been so simple in the backseat of an M3.

We're moving out of an incredible 2014 Audi SQ5 (3.0TDI, not Petrol) and into a 2015 BMW X5 m50d. I've landed myself an amazing deal on car which is new and in stock which is highly optioned. I passed on a similarly loaded 50i which I really enjoyed test driving. Luxury cars in Australia tend to be heavily optioned from the factory so the list below takes it to a car which has the vast majority of available options fitted.

Black Sapphire Metallic
Mocha Nappa Leather
American Oak Trim

Options
  • M Sport Package
  • Multifunction Instrument Display
  • Panorama Glass Sunroof
  • Active Seat Ventilation
  • Comfort Seats
  • Roller Sun-blinds
  • Lane Change Warning
  • Tyre Pressure Monitor
  • ConnectedDrive Freedom w/ Internet

Initial planned mods include blackout grill for a stealth look and wheels / brake upgrade once I do some research.

Pictures to come and lots of questions which I will slowly add to this thread.

Thanks,
Jay

Thanks guys.

The car is coming from interstate, which is actually why I managed such a deal. Regional dealerships tend to do deals that city dealers cannot. Car is expected to be on a carrier within the next few days. In the meantime however I'm waiting on a few dealer pictures and walk around video.

I do have some quick questions though.

1. What are people's thoughts on swapping out American Oak trim for M Performance CF for the doors and CF/Alcantara for the dash, WITH a Mocha Nappa interior? Any examples?

I'm keen on the car looking stealth and blacked out, however I'm not keen on Dakota leather due to its heavy grain (Audi Nappa is incredible), so I went with the 'free' upgrade to Nappa we get here. I only wish there was a black Nappa option, like the Merino in the X5M.

2. It seems as though the center console knee pad leather is only available on X6 models along with the X5M and X6M. Considering the potential above CF modification, I'd need to replace the American Oak trim on the center console as M Performance do not make a CF center console trim.

How do you get this part? Would it be impossible without a chassis for an appropriate car? Being a Mocha/Black Nappa interior, I'd have to order the black merino part from the X5M.

Alternatively, fitting the piano black individual trim for the center console would work and potentially be easier to obtain.

Thanks.

Bump - keen to see if anyone can answer 1. For me, or provide pictures of a Mocha / Carbon Fibre interior.

Thanks!

In other news, car is about 1.5 weeks away.

Found a user who has Mocha Nappa and fitted the M performance carbon interior. He very kindly took some pictures for me to give me an idea. I think it looks absolutely incredible, though I need to find a solution for the centre console trim which will be in American Oak when my car arrives.

I hope he doesn't mind me using his pictures to show how awesome this can look.

His original trim is aluminium which works well due to the other aluminium accents in the cabin, especially with the carbon console trim around the gear lever/controls. Personally I'd prefer a darker trim along the sides of the console which will work with the CF trim on the flat top/control area, and Mocha leather along the sides of the centre console. Perhaps piano black? Ideally id be able to get the Alcantara 'knee pad' trim like the Alcantara M sport X6 has, or the black Merino leather that the X5M and X6M have.

Replicating this whole look essentially, though I have no idea if you can order this Alcantara part, nor how difficult it might be to fit.

Will get a better feel for it once the car arrives, but in the meantime, where are the best places to buy M Performance interior and exterior products which ship to Australia. I don't believe getbmwparts ships to Australia unfortunately. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

IMO Carbon fiber trim will go very well with any interior color choice. It also creates a very modern and sporty feeling in the cabin as well versus wood. Someone in the classified was selling a set that came off his X5M from it looks like it got sold recently.

Interesting, and a fantastic price!

Notice the buy also runs mocha with the carbon and it does look great.

He has the fine line trim on the centre console still - need to find a solution for that.

CF trim is on my list. Although the alcantara pieces look great, I'd rather leave the gloss black. I'm just not a fan of the aluminum hexagon trim pieces...looks cheap IMO.

Not a fan of hexagon either - I don't get it. Aluminum is much better.

The CF trim with piano black (instead of Alcantara) can only be found in the X5M/X6M.

It seems like forever but a week and a half has passed and my car arrives tomorrow.

As most of you might appreciate, i've been investigating mods in the interim and one of the first things I wanted to do was swap out the stock M50d 469M wheels. Even though they are unique to the M50d, I don't like the 20" size with the size of the X5. I had 21" wheels on my Audi SQ5 which is a smaller vehicle but the balance was perfect.

I've got an opportunity to pick up a brand new set of genuine M Performance 599M wheels on Pirelli RFT's. I'd be able to trade my wheels (468M) for 50% value. Basically the 599M cost over $9k AUD brand new from BMW, or about $7000 AUD from ebay sellers. It sounds like a good deal ($3500 AUD + my 468M wheels).

What I am wondering however is how the 599M fit in comparison to the 468M/469M wheels which come standard on the M50d and M Sport X5's respectively. Are they a wider wheel and will therefore fill out the guards more than the stock wheels, removing the need for spacers? And also how you think they will ride in comparison to the stock 20's.

Appreciate any thoughts you guys may have.

If you get 21" please consider michelin sport non run flat tires, it is a great tire and your car will be more comfortable and handle better than rft with the same setup.

Very excited Kzang!

I'm checking out the 599M's tomorrow, though they're fitted with the standard Pirelli RFT's already, and I'm unsure if I'll be able to switch tyres.

I'll find out, but which Michelin sports in particular? I'm not overly familiar.

As a side note, would it be better to buy the 22" replica 599's and pick my own rubber?

@elisiX , if you are going to upgrade from the 21" to the 22", don't do the replica wheels. I would just stick with oem 21" or going high quality aftermarket 22".

599M's being fitted now. Managed to also negotiate switching out the new Pirelli RFT for Michelin non RFT's. Hopefully the difference is noticeable - coughed up another $900 to add them into the deal.

What tyre pressures should I be running front and rear? At the moment I've just got 40 all around as the guy told me that with such aggressive camber on the X5, you want the tyres as flat as possible? Something to that effect. Basically to limit the outside wearing out so quickly.

I might add, I've been driving for about 5km on the 599M's with Michelins, and in sport/+ they feel like the 468M on Contis did in comfort. It's amazing how different the michelins feel in comparison. Can't imagine what the Pirelli RFT would have been like in 21".

Feels like i'm talking to myself, but you guys wake up when I get to bed just about

How the car arrived yesterday. Quite dirty after a long trip and fitted with the stock 20" 468M wheels.

It didn't take long for the mods to begin..

This morning after a 'wash' in the crazy rain, fitted with the new M Performance 21" 599M wheels.

As I mentioned earlier, i've replaced the new Pirelli RFT for Michelin non RFT's. The difference is night an day noticeable and absolutely worth it. Thank you for the recommendation. Still considering a slight drop, though unsure what springs to go with or whether I should or not. The ride is perfect on the Michelins so the last thing I want to do is mess with that too much.

Next up is to replace the grill with an M Performance blacked grill to eradicate any remaining chrome. I will however be sticking with the Ferric grey elements on the mirrors and air intake fins which set the M50d apart from other M sport models. And as funds permit, hopefully I will add the front splitter and rear diffuser to complete the exterior look.

Oh and I will be replacing my license plate (which is from the state I purchased the car from). The plates from my state are much nicer and i'll be going with a black slimline plate with silver numerals. Likely to be my 3 initials. Nice and clean.
