Sticky Steering?

For the past few months, Ive noticed when we turn to the right when driving, the steering wheel will want to stay at around the 1:00 area, but only if you stop it there in a turn. You can go through it, you can go up to it, you can do whatever without a single notion of there being a sticky spot in the turning of the wheel. But, if you are driving, and bearing around a right hand corner, and turn the wheel to about the 1:00 position, it'll want to stay there, and WILL stay there until you remove it from that position. Sometimes it takes a little effort, but not enough to over-correct. Its becoming quite bothersome, and lately, its been worse than ever, and I am worried it might just STAY there.

I had it up off the ground, and couldn't feel any tight spots when turning the wheel in the vehicle, or even turning the wheel manually outside the vehicle, but this was when I first started noticing it. Fast forward to today, and I pulled the "lower steering column" out, and checked it. I noticed nothing unusual about it, and it all moved freely. I have no noises, or creaks, or anything unusual going on, other than the sticky spot.

Im trying to avoid going to a dealer for now, because I've seen where people have had the same issues, and having thousands of dollars wrapped up into it, and leave with the exact same issues as when they got there. Id rather get some info, maybe see if anyone else experienced this, and had it fixed, or something.

Thanks.

You can try to recalibrate the electronic power steering using ISTA.

We had exactly the same problem with ours. The problem ended up being the joint in the lower steering column.

Sadly, I don't have ISTA, or a way to run it :/

Can you describe your problem to me? Was it only to the right? Was it only when driving? Was it random? Was it all the time? etc etc. Describe it to me, like you described it to the shop that fixed it.

It was only to the right. I assume it was only when driving, never really tried it sitting still. It didn't do it all the time, but it was pretty consistent on this one road I drove on the way to town.

The first time into the shop I described it being stuck in one position at about 1:30 or so if your hand started at 12:00. Of course when I picked it back up they couldn't reproduce the problem.

The next time I took it in I asked the mechanic to go for a ride and he immediately saw the problem. They replaced the rack first and then the lower column. The column fixed the problem.

Stealing the thread here but can the steering be "calibrated" so that it gives a "heavier" feel and more resistance like the M model? Thanks!
