class II hitch for bike rack - why so challenging?

So reading posts here it sounds like people are paying $1200 - $1400 for the dealer to install a hitch? I suspect that is for a class III hitch.
I notice that this oem Class II item:https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462

Looks like it would work for bike racks - (I dont need wiring/trailer towing capabilities). Is this a simple install? Anyone with the same interests as me - carrying a bike rack of up to 3 bikes ... care to comment. Would be appreciated.

That part is just the hitch receiver. You will still need the factory rear cross member.

I had the Invisihitch (Rack option; $615) installed on my car for $200 at a local body shop. I would highly recommend this as an option. You can do the install yourself if you have the time. Here is the thread on it: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...ght=invishitch

Yes - aware of this product....thanks for the recommendation. Seems a royal pain we need to remove bumper, etc... just to have a hitch installed on an x5. If this was a Porche 911 I could understand - but $1000 for a simple bike rack only receiver hitch install seems brutal.

Getting quoted $500 to have invisi hitch installed? So aounds like we are at $1100 to have the bike rack version of the hitch installed.

I also need a hitch to carry 5 bikes in my 2016 x5 Msport...so i found in ebay from BMWof sarasota the crossbeam for $300 and the 2"adapter for $185..(just got them) and went to bmw to get 6 white pins for the flares $5.... installation free.. . so for $490 is not bad to carry some bikes around sometimes...
The installation doesn't seem hard (if you are good with tools) so i also downloaded de bmw instructions. Just make sure to have a few beers ;-) and time... will attempt to install it tomorrow night..will post some pics later

Great write-up on the install!

Don,

Thanks a lot for the info, so just to confirm it was no-cut (of bumper) solution?

Does the installation require removal of the rear bumper?

Yup, otherwise there is no way to swap cross beam behind bumper.

BTW, if you are hell bend on doing the install, you should just complete the wiring and coding as well for a trailer. You're already going to be at least $500 into the project alone, wiring and coding adds $300 or so more, but might as well add the full functionality. Not sure if it'll be a PITA to add wiring afterwards without taking the bumper off again.

In the old days, there is a BMW OE alternative for a hitless rear mount. It mounts on your rear tow hook and even tilts to let you open your hatch.

Too bad no such thing for F15. They currently have it for the X1.
