20" 469m with All Season

Has anyone here put AS tires on 469M 20" wheels?

My car is coming next week and I'm considering buying a set of All season to swap out the performance tires they come with since the performance tires are terrible in the winter. I would just drive with the all seasons year round and sell the performance tires.

Has anyone done this? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Yes, a lot of people have.
I for one used the Continental ExtremeContact™ DWS06 and loved them.
Do a quick search, there are a lot of threads covering this topic on here.

At least half of us are driving on all seasons. Doesn’t matter 469 or any other style. Most common tire is DWS06 Continental

I have these Michelin’s and they are phenomenal. Bit more coin than the conti’s bit worth it in my opinion. Pilot Sport A/S N-spec

If I go with 20" rims these will be the tires I purchase.

I like Michelin, they are usually very comfy, quiet and soft riding brand in general. I like their winter tires especially. Last long too. But here's some specs:

1. DWS06 is Ultra High Performance while Pilot Sport A/S N are just High Performance
2. DWS06 has higher treadwear rating 560 vs 500 - meaning DWS06 will last longer
3. Speed rating for DWS06 is 186mph vs 149mph for Michelin (I don't think speeds above 149mph matter for many, but specs are specs)
4. DWS06 is about $300 cheaper for a set of staggered 20'' tires for X5

So it's 4:0 - hands down DWS06 leads so far. Just my opinion man.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I’m going to go with the DWS06.

Found a set of 4 from DiscountTire on ebay for $968.

Thoughts on the price?

Specs are great and all, but my real world experience with the DWS06 was not good at all. I switched out of them to the Michelin after about 6 weeks. Constant flat spotting and vibration issues with the DWS06, have had zero issues with the Michelin and they are quieter too. This is just my experience, so not saying they aren’t a good tire, but certainly not a 4:0 for me. See the convo in this thread... http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1492491

You are correct. The conti-DWS are great tires. I'm on my 5th BMW and have owned 2 sets in the past.
I convinced my nieghbor, who owns a porsche and his brother who drives an Infiniti to get them and they did. The infinity owner just purchased a 2018 Audi Q7 and had the OEMs switched out to the conti- DWS tires.
With that said the conti-DWS do have issues and limitations as do other tires.
Regardless of specs, one must consider the collaboration and thought process that went into the new tire design by Michelin and Porsche for the new N-spec tire. Although it's a new tire there are a few favorable feedbacks on tirerack by BMW X5 owners who had DWS tires before. I believe there are two members in the forum who have switched from DWS to the new N-spec tire and love them.
One of the main reasons a lot of BMW owners go with the conti-DWS tires is due to the staggered options. They offer a lot of variations which you can't find with other brands.
I'm still in the process of looking for the right set of 469m 20's and when I do find them I will probably end up with the new N-spec Michelin tires regardless of specs.

So, there are people that have had great and not so great experiences with them. I think thats par for the course on just about everything. You’ll find that the Contis have more great reviews than bad.
I used mine in hot, cold, wet, snow, ice, and speeds over 130mph on the regular (I lived in Germany). Zero issues, I only replaced them because I switched to 21” wheels. I would swap out my MPSS for them if they made them in the 21” size.

They do flat spot if sitting for a while but that goes away after a mile or so.
As for wheel balancing, you need to make sure the shop uses a dynamic wheel balance machine and not a static balancer. Dynamic is a must for wide tires.

The majority of AS tires around here are the DWS, I personally just didn't like them. After looking for an alternate, I ended up with Toyo Proxes ST IIIs . Fairly cheap and so far I really like them and have 0 issues or complaints with them. I spoke with a few guys around here that had them and they all had positive experiences as well. If you are still looking, those those in the mix as well.

Good Luck!

The fact that the 469 wheels are naturally wide, the all seasons like DWS06 is not that great in the snow.. especially in heavy snow on unplowed roads.. If I were to use my 469M wheels to drive in snow, then I would definitely get dedicated snow/winter tires for snowy seasons and switch rubbers to Summer performance tires for the warm season.

That is true, especially for Canada and northern states. But what about NY? I think AWD on Conti DWS06 is all you need. Cheapest universal solution - that's all I'm saying.

I don't believe treadwear has a standard which can be compared across brands. My understanding is treadwear is relative to other models within the brand and the rating can be whatever the manufacturer wants it to be.

So many mixed reviews, very indecisive

The difference in price from DWS06 to Michelin on ebay is only around $100+-

for a full set.

I'm really interested in which one will perform better and it looks like the Contis win in that category so for now I'm gonna go with the Contis.

If my dealer could swap out my performance tires for A/S before taking delivery I will do that of course.

Arriving to dealer in 2 days!

Those tires are going to glide, slide, and slip on any real Snow. On light dusting or in snow of 1 inch or so its a non issue.. Either get snow tires that will dig into the snow or get some skinny width wheel/ AS tire combo for better results. One of the worst feelings is trying to stop but your car just keeps sliding forward at a stop light...
