It's dark outside, the EGR cooler definitely looks different than the original one. The shape is different and the connector housing is as well.
It is not Pierburg, it has a label with Borgwarner on it, which I assume is the OEM.

Here is a (dark) picture.

Got this service done last week on our 2018. Now have EGR valve stuck codes....ugh. You'd think inspecting related stuff would be a part of the recall work.

UPDATE: The EGR valve gets replaced with the recall. MY BMW Dealer actually promptly replaced the EGR valve, no questions asked.

Just had my ERG cooler replaced under the recall. Now when I enter my VIN in the BMW recall link, it says no recalls for this vehicle.

Have mine scheduled for next week. Going to have them check out my EGR valve as well.

Finally got it back from service. A little over 2 weeks. Glad I requested a loaner. Looks like they replace the cooler and EGR as an assembly. Service invoice lists it as Exhaust Gas Cooler Low. I also took a pic of the old EGR and new. Previous was a Wahler and new is a BorgWarner.

Dear all, for those of you like me that are still impacted by this recall, with no action from BMW that is impacting our use of the vehicle and in my case resulting in a failed smog test and hence not allowing me to renew registration of the vehicle, I encourage you to contact the following attorneys that are leading a different case action against BMW North America: (A recall without a repair that has been mishandled):

Here are the different plaintiff's attorneys working on the case, which is Patlan, et al. v. BMW of North America, NJ District Court Case Number 2:18-cv-09546-CCC-MF

Well... our local dealer originally refused to do the recall stating that the VIN says "remedy unavailable" when I mentioned it while picking up the X5 from a state inspection. Then, SA later called saying shop foreman said they would do it after all. So made an appt for a Thursday, and dropped the car off...

They said it wasn't complete on Friday and that it would be ready Monday. Come Monday I go to pickup the car and they said the recall wasn't done because the VIN states "remedy unavailable."

What a waste of time. They did my Dad's F10 5er diesel a month earlier even though his
VIN also said remedy unavailable. Also seeing others are getting theirs done... ugh.

Another month passes and I'm still waiting on that recall that was issued over a year ago...

EDIT: ended up getting this mid/end of February. No issues

Back to the dealership next week

Got mine back, took just a day to complete. Which was a bummer since my loaner was a 700 mile 2023 x5 M50 Not enough time to truly enjoy that!

Did yours say "Remedy Available" for your VIN? I checked ours again a few days ago and still reads "Unavailable."

I got a letter when the recall first started, saying Unavailable, then later a letter that said Available.

Gotcha. Thank you. I guess they are working through VINs as parts become available...

I'll just have to be patient I suppose.

Finally got the "Remedy is Available" letter yesterday. Going to make an appt for them to do the work and diag an intermittent CEL the X5 has been throwing. I hooked it up to ISTA but I'll pay the $185 to have them look at it. Second pair of eyes...

Just got the estimate for recall. The EGR is covered, but they are not covering the manifold. Any comment? The images are dirty/bad. My first dealer did not do as good a job, and went to another. Frustrating to say the least.

I have Racechip installed, of course they are blaming that. I'm an idiot, should have removed it prior to taking it in.

$2300 to repair/replace/fix.

Thoughts?

Per the Recall, intake manifold is included.

"Remedy:
Dealers will replace the EGR cooler and inspect the intake manifold, replacing it as necessary, free of charge"

Not sure how the Racechip will affect the recall... IME any weasel room is very quickly taken and abused.

I took ours in this morning and they Uber'd me home, no loaner. Got their inspection video. Came back as I had expected. They are going to do the EGR cooler (of course), but they are also going to do the diesel particulate sensor as well under extended emissions warranty.

They notified me of the bad transfer pump for the passive tank, have not heard anything as of yet regarding a quote for that. I was mainly looking for confirmation on that and as the DPS is covered I don't think I'll have to pay any diag charges but we'll see. Will update...

Agreed - but, if they are not replacing the intake because of Racechip, then they should take that same stance with the EGR. By replacing the EGR and holding back on the intake, they are not adhering to the recall.

Not to mention the Recall and the remedy has been a year+ long process. Meaning the issue has been brewing for years prior.

So how do they prove the chip caused the issue while knowing the that defective EGRs are causing manifold damage across a production range.

I'd print that recall, highlight the remedy, put in front of the service manager and ask him where it states the dealer gets to decide what is replaced.

Oh, I fully agree.

I've just had warranty work denied due to mods in the past when I was younger. I have a policy now of zero mods until warranty period is over. Is what it is...
