2015 X5 35d injector problem code P02D1

Nothing but problems with this car since the EGR recall was performed. 2 check engine lights for coolant bypass valve stuck closed. $3200 later thought everything was fixed. A week after the coolant bypass valve CEL was fixed (took two trips to the dealer). I get another CEL.

My latest CEL is for P02D1 Cylinder 3 fuel injector offset learning at max limit. Severity 2 of 3. Vehicle appears to be operating normally.

Anyone had this issue? How much is a new injector going to cost me?

Did you have the Fuel Pump recall performed as well?

The prognosis for the CEL that you provided sadly points to a failing injector which will most likely need to be replaced (not cheap $700++). The potential good news is that your F15 may fall under the Injector extended warranty: 10year/120K miles. If you are outside the coverage, it may be worth printing out the warranty, highlighting the CEL it lists that matches yours and asking BMW for a goodwill replacement.

Injector Warranty

Please let us know what else you find. There are quite a few Diesel owners on this forum and it's good that we help each other stay informed.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHT: It may be a long shot, but since you are not experiencing performance issues, maybe run some good Diesel Additive to see if maybe the injector is just clogged.

My X5 was not involved on the fuel pump recall. It does have an extended fuel pump warranty. The injector warranty covers 2016 and 2017 model X5 35d not 2015 35d.
I will bring up the issue with the service manager as the notice states:

"Note: The Model information above is for informational purposes only, it is not the only deciding factor."

I would try a fuel system additive, but I'm told that BMW will check for additives in case the HPFP grenades and deny the claim if an additive has been used.

$2100.00 to replace the #3 injector. The extended warranty does not apply to my model year. Probably time to get rid of the vehicle. 97k miles and over $5,000 in repairs in he last two months.

DOH!!! That is brutal. $2.1K seems high, did you consider and Indy Shop?

What is the breakdown of parts and labor for that estimate?

I do understand you rationale for dumping.

Use hot shots extreme, when it hits 1/2 tank out 8 ounces. And wait for the gas light to go on.

If you got to have it changed, in you are in FL I’ll do it for 1000$

It seems kind of high unless a lot of labor is involved. BMW tends to bury some of these items and require lots of disassembly to reach the part that needs to be replaced. I believe that the injector itself is probably $700 to $800.

You can get a Bosch ,check rock auto, for under $300 it’s the exact same part, I think bmw etches the part number on the barrel

But you should have to replace them, just use the additive. I have replaced a few and get codes from time to time.

Hotshots extreme takes care of the problem.

I disassembled one that I took out and it looks real good, to bad it’s not easy to reassemble it. So additive is the way to go.

Also budget $1000 a year in off maintenance for your x5 going forward…

Injectors 1-4 are easy to get to, a few b-nuts and the injectors pop right out. In some cases the injector is stuck in there. Cleaning the seat is real important, the injector tubes are very narrow. Also if the crush seal sticks to the head you need a special tool to remove it. I have had that happen once. I actually did have that tool luckily

The back two injectors need a bit more covers removed if I remember correctly.

I talked to the BMW service advisor today. He recommended the use of a diesel treatment to clean the injectors and hopefully prevent future injector failures. I asked him about whether this would void the extended HPFP warranty and he said no. He said he had never been requested to send a fuel sample to BMW with regards to a HPFP failure.

I've used Stanadyne in the past in my diesel Mercedes. Any other recommendations? Hot Shots Extreme might be more appropriate for an initial dose?

I've had good luck with Liqui Moly Super Diesel Additive in the past.
