My last hope of getting this flew out the window, once I was told that if there is any guarantee work or new software done on the car, the whole cluster must be takenoutevery time.

Bummer...

Takes 5 minutes to take out once you've already done and mastered it. The likelihood most of us get that kind of work done is very slim. If you aren't going to install and remove it yourself, then yes I can understand how you feel for sure. It would be tedious to get someone else to do it every time.

It would be great to see a video of the removal/install. It'll ease many nerves.

Sure, when I get time, I'll make one. I made a coding video today with the instructions side by side, but my video capture software ended up getting corrupted where it only captured like the first 5 minutes out of a 23 minute video! I actually did fdl coding (the 20 steps in my coding thread), clearing DCTs for error codes, and FA/VO coding. That wasted 30-40 minutes of my day, unfortunately, lol.

Question, why do we need to remove this cluster every time it's taken in for service? What would they even do if they see this in place?

I already explained it to you over text, but I'm going to reply so that anyone else who sees this understands.

Ok, so I just spoke with Shawn Sheridan. He explained that the reason why we must remove 6WB every time there is ISTA/P (dealer diagnostic program) coding involved at the dealer is because ISTA/P recognizes the 6WB as an invalid option for U.S. F15 X5s. So, when the BMW service department is coding your car for a software update or whatever using ISTA/P, ISTA/P will hault and refuse to program the car until the Kombi ECU is replaced (meaning your original Kombi/Cluster). This is why we have to remove it, otherwise you won't be able to get it serviced properly for anything related to software and coding. For everything else outside of ISTA/P like body work or oil changes, the replacement isn't necessary. It's always good to call your dealer to know whether or not they will be updating software or anything in your car (no need to tell them why). It will not void your warranty, it will simply not let them code what they may need to code unless you have your original cluster in for that particular update.

I hope that clarifies everything for everyone .

Just an update and disclaimer to anyone thinking of buying the 6WB. Those of you who have HUD and have coded TURN SIGNALS and LANE DEPARTURE WARNING into your HUD, you will lose these two codes. They do not work on 6WB. I have confirmed this with Shawn Sheridan and with x5manu (his car has 6WB and HUD).

I have mine coded to show the turn signals in the HUD but it's not really a big loss not having those. Will the HUD still work with the 6WB at least?

Yes, it will. Only those two "coded" features, which don't come from factory stock settings will not be able to be coded.

OP updated with pictures on how to use the hook tool to remove the cluster. Use both at the same time to compress both latches to it pops out together.

Lol, soon I'll post a video when I get time. I need my car back for that.

Regarding Black Friday deals...I doubt it, haha. Whether they acknowledge it or not, I know I've given them business.

That's all? I thought you would have to take the dash apart to get to that. Especially that youtube video, just pops right out!
Still, I am not paying $2k to retrofit that in my leased vehicle, but I really wish it was an option.

Haha, no not that complicated. It's very straightforward if you follow the instructions I've made. Yeah, it's actually around $1500 and only worth it if you own your vehicle. Totally pointless if you lease - agreed.
