X5 F15 30d Screech/squeal sound engine in idle - is this normal?
Hi Guys,
Feel like this noise is new, I have an air gushing sound on hard acceleration but very intermittent only happens once every fortnight or so. Mainly in reverse when hitting it hard on incline drive. But now I'm hearing this screech/squeal when I start the car and let it idle from drivers side front wheel area. Noise is pretty much the same when car warms up or only slightly less. On drive away I don't have no power loss or any rough idling. Noise is not present on passenger side wheel or in front of engine bay just down here at drivers wheel area. Any advice please Link to video: https://youtube.com/shorts/oFL5VGIJs0U?feature=share Last edited by b3magic; 06-22-2022 at 09:10 AM.. Reason: Added detail |

Would be interesting to see viddy from under the hood.
Drivers side for UK should be the exhaust side of engine. There are a number of possible fail points on that side. Just a few areas that come to mind:
Have you scanned the vehicle for fault codes? That might begin to help narrow the search. |

Scanned car, no faults. I'll get a vid of under the hood but from what I recall there's no noise coming from that area. Cheers, B |

What's the mileage on you X5d? Does the noise change or respond with increased RPM (have someone inside fluctuate the RPM while you listen outside)?

The screech noise is only apparent on idle, not when revving the engine or on drive away/reverse. I do think it quietens down a slight when the car warms up. I've noticed it 2-3 weeks ago but have been thinking it's normal until today and now I am doubting myself, I don't recall this sound being there before. |

Not sure and maybe it is just me… but I cannot hear the noise you are talking about.
On idle you say.. have you checked your serpentine belt and tensioner? |

Not many mechanics in my area too so hoping someone with more knowledge than me can chime in before I get it checked out. Stealers are £100p/hour for investigation work. |

I understand. I'm sure someone here can help you, but the video you posted is hard to hear the noise you're talking about. Squealing and nothing from the computer, the first thing that would come to mind for me to check would be the belt and anything it's touching.
Check out this video for reference… |

I honestly do not hear anything other than a Diesel Engine in your videos.

Upon start up today it was apparent sitting on idle but after 5 mins or so it had disappeared. Now that I'm tuned in I will pick up its characteristics, ha! |
