What (if anything) was under the carpet here?

Hi,

My friend's X5 was stolen and recovered. One of the things they did was cut into this part of the carpet, which seems oddly specific. Does (did) anything exist beneath the carpet there? Thanks!

That's my only guess considering there was foam everywhere, so they dug it out. Weird spot but I guess unless a dog was brought out who's looking under there.

Yeah, no first hand experience, but I've seen on YT vids that, in Euro cars, there is a favorite spot to hide things in. I guess because the carpet and foam is so thick that it provides a decent cavity when removed.
