Are our cars hack proof?
A friend had his Jeep Wrangler hacked and stolen (his work cameras captured the whole thing) no windows were broken and the video showed them using a laptop once inside the vehicle to start it before driving off! What's the security like for the late model f15/16s? I was also told that the bad guys can capture your code when you use your fob to open your door or even when your within a certain distance! Anyone out there had there's stolen or broken into with no windows broken?

The OBDII port on the F15 is inside the cabin so they would have to break the window at least. Then there is tracking courtesy of BMW Connected Drive.
I think a while ago BMW didn't encrypt the connection and that was "hackable" but they fixed it quickly. But nothing electronic is ever hack-proof. Just a matter for time really. |

A new way is to amplify the signal between your key and the car. That way the car thinks that the key is in close proximity to the car.
From there they have full access to the car, even start the car and drive away.

Faraday Bag
I bought one of this for my key fobs when they are not in use or in my pocket. Absolutely NO signal leak when inside the bag.

Wow the 4 stolen from BMW dealership in Russia scary and too easy. Anyone know of a good OBCD lock that's easy to install? Or if the dealer can supply and install? I'm hoping one of those and keeping key when now in use in a insulating pouch might prevent somewhat at least!

easiest to remove .
Btw OBD2 blocking doesn't help , if car ordered to be stolen bad guys will bring their own OBD programmed for that model . If you want to protect your car you have to install mechanical block to access t salon , hood , trunk , put electronic block on gearbox brains , on injectors and OBD . It will save your car . In Russia in your car will be installed satellite alarm , gsm signal and plus many more systems to protect . But it also NOT guaranteed from stealing if your car "ordered" |

I guess if a thief wants it bad enough he'll get it. Only thing to do I guess is slow him down. If he sees the lock maybe he'll steal the next car. No way to deter a professional auto thief though.
In Europe, where are these stolen cars end up showing up? |

Scary stuff but it's the same motto as always. My dad always told me, "if the thief wants it badly enough, they'll get it"
In the end, the best thing to do is to make it difficult enough for the thief to go elsewhere. My X5 is nice but certainly not nice enough to spend that much time cracking if there's an easier one to be taken down the block. Tactics include: - parked in locked garage or in open bright area with lots of people watching - insulating pouches are a good idea - I still use the club (while receiving ridicule every time a co-worker sits in my car) - dash cam present - the pedal jack is a good idea and I used to carry one to lock out the clutch when I drove manual - set car alarm - car doors should be locked each time - lock the OBD port - consider installing Lojack? - place a huge NRA sticker in the rear window |

For example one crazy speedygonzales totaled the car without insurance , so to fix it they can pay 8K$ to steal similar model (wich is worthy for stealer) and pay another 1000$ to change WIN plates all over the body . Thats it . Many of my friends lost their cars in Russia . Poland very criminal in that way , Latvian, Lituanian guys likes to "fix" cars . |

Keep your keyfob (when in house) in a full metal box, that way the signal can not be amplified. Cut the power wire to your obd and install a hidden switch somewhere else in your car (ie center console/glovebox/etc). Make sure to have a decent car alarm with tracking capabilities. With these simple measures you might stop the low life laptop hackers for now. Keep an eye out on forums like these for new methods, to take counter measures. Try to park your car in a garage or have some camera's with motion detection guard your car.

Cars get stolen in Western Europe and go directly to Eastern Europe. No border checks make it childs play. Before you even wake up and see your X5 is missing, it's halfway to Romania. Parts theft is huge also.

Currently the best anti theft system is a manual transmission.
All of these younger generation doesn't know how to drive manual transmission.

It's easier than that these days... Amplifiers are able to broadcast your key's information to the vehicle and the "bad guys" are able to access it with ease and even drive off however another method is "black box" but so far only honda, acura, toyota, lexus are affected. It has stored key codes and frequencies and cycles through hundreds of them per second and the individual just has to walk down the street and see which vehicles open as they pass.
