When did US cars start getting Black Boxes?

I was reading through the Owner's Manual, and on Pp. 8-9, found out F15s are equipped with Data Memory and Event Data Recorders (EDR). I knew Black Boxes were coming, but didn't know they were already here. Is this good or bad? I suppose we have no choice, but thought it was something to share.

Interesting. I suppose with all the cameras on our cars these days, could be good or bad depending on which the driver is
