Tire Problems

I'm running my X5M50D with 21" run flat tires. Yesterday I was on a business trip to Dalarna i Sweden and on my way home to Stockholm, driving on the cruise control at about 100-110 km/h, about 65 mph, I suddenly hear a lot of noise from the rear right tire. Its so bad I have to immediately stop the car. I walk around the car and I see nothing wrong. I check the right rear tire and it is damaged. A two feet long peace of the tire is loose and you can se the metal cord within the tire.

Even though the car does not indicate a flat tire I didn't dare drive it any further. I called BMW Hotline and the sent a tow truck and arrange for a rental Volvo at the nearest gas station.

I talked to the place they towed the car to today and they have never seen anything like this before.

Even though I had a run flat tire I hade to get the car towed and Im not getting it back until Friday. Still it could be worse. I'm flying to the US and Atlanta on Saturday for a week and my wife need our X5 while I'm gone.

4 new 21" tires are not sheep in Sweden, I tell you that. its more than USD 3000.

usually this can happen on worn out tires but it doesn't seen like the case, maybe a manufacture defect, i would contact the tire company.

If possible, please have this seriously checked and please post the results - it could be a rare type of puncture, like hitting sort of a fishing hook solidly embedded in the ground that pulled off a long rubber strip - or a tire manufacturing defect, or a premature tire shoulder wear due to a very wrong rear suspension adjustment.

Whatever happened, it did so at "Swedish speed" -at German speeds the outcome could have been catastrophic.

That looks terrifying. I'll have to pay close attention to the tires now.

Definently have the tire manufacturers rep look at this. If this tire was NOT excessively worn on the inside edge than I have a uneasy feeling this is one of those rare tires that may have got by the QC checks at the factory.

Best of luck to you, sorry this happened.

Looks like you worn out the tire and due to the aggressive camber these cars have, the inside is more worn. Many summerr tires do not last that many miles.

Anyways I would measure your other tires. Make sure to do inside, middle, and outside threads.

35000km on a tire size and performace car / model like this its honestly pretty good.

all you can do is have proper geometry and chasis alignment done

This... our camber is set to wear inner more than outer for handling...
Always inspect your tire wear and change tires accordingly.

Inside shoulder does look pretty worn, take a picture of the left rear tire showing the inner shoulder as well.

Also I would adjust the tire pressures a bit higher to combat this. Although doing so will make the ride slightly harsher, but overall should improve handling, durability, and mileage. I also had some problems with more wear on the inside (very little), so I increased cold pressures 4 psi over recommendation, seem to have helped me a bit, tires after 20000 miles now seem good wear overall. To combat harsher ride, consider non-runflat tires and a spare donut.

But if you have consistent issues, I would consider doing a wheel alignment as well, but adjusting tire pressures can remedy a lot of issues without introducing risk or additional cost.

I would hate to see a fellow driver feel unsafe driving this beautiful beast of a car just because of this unexpected tire wear issue.

Please do, however, report back how the other tire is looking so we have a better idea of the situation.

I picked up the car yesterday with 4 new tires. This was not an issue of more ware on the inside. The tire simply malfunctioned.
