Your car will not throw the code for it, unless you perform a nox test. But, to run the test you should replace your def just to be on the safe side.

That's actually an interesting read. And good news that you finally got the error fixed.

From reading your post I see you use SCR and DEF. i thought they were the same thing. What does DEF stand for?

DEF - Diesel exhaust fluid (also known as AUS 32 and marketed as AdBlue)
SCR - Selective catalytic reduction - essentially very fancy catalytic convertor.


I actually disagree with your assessment on this forum. This might be one of the slowest boards I visit. 3 & 5 series forums tend to be rather responsive. Since you are in UK, there are quite few UK BMW forums that are really good with very active users.

So I finally got to task on this one. After following the steps in this guide: - This is not for the F15 but it's extremely similar so.

I was able to find the SCR metering unit / Adblue injector. Even with the car jacked up... it was still tucked behind / almost on top of the exhaust - fairly easy to miss if not careful.

I could immediately see a problem... I had crystallised Adblue everywhere. Upon closer inspection the pressure line connector was snappers on my metering unit. See #6 in the below link: - again not my car but it looks identical.

And as result Adblue was allowed to leak.

The only fix as to order a new metering unit (prices range from £200 £350)

To confirm the correct part I used

For my car (2014 F15) I needed part number: 18308514448

I will post more when this arrives and I fit it.

My only question is that how do you disconnect the two rubber hoses and also the electrical connector? The rubber hoses have jubilee type clips but it's not obvious how to remove them. Any ideas? I need to figure out how to disconnect #4, 5 and 7 from the "Newtis" link above. Any help would be greatly received.
The pressure line is ok because that is snapped off already lol

How did your def line snap? Regarding metering unit: if there is build up, you could just let it soak in distilled water, or if you are about to replace it - in something stronger (WD-40 melts that thing rather well).

The two rubber hoses are coolant lines. You can just shove a screwdriver and pry the clips away. Coincidentally, I just came across this post which has a video on how to do them:

The plastic part on the metering unit snapped away. I have no idea why, what I removed the shield/ tray the hose was just hanging there. It took me a while to realise that it had snapped off and it was inside the hose. Annoyingly i only noticed it was snapped right after I had cleaned it with boiling water.

I have a new metering unit being shipped to me. Hopefully for later this week.

Hi all, as an update the error has been fixed by replacing the metering unit.

The only slight problem was the two rubber hoses are connected to the cars coolant systems. So when we disconnected the hoses we drained the coolant. On a plus point the coolant has been refreshed now lol.

Maybe I've been praising my 2014 X5 40d and it's 78K trouble free miles too much. A recent 600 mile round trip threw up an "AdBlue System Failure" warning that reset on every shutdown only to reappear 20 miles into a journey, and now with a permanent CEL.

Topped up the AdBlue even though there was 2.5L remaining in tank. Vehicle us reporting normal AdBlue consumption of 0.5L after 700 miles, but no change to warnings or CEL, so it went in to the dealership yesterday.

So far 2x NOX sensors have been replaced and they're fitting a replacement 'meter unit' this afternoon. They're keeping it in overnight (again) and will test again tomorrow morning. So far we're up to £1900 in parts and labour. Hope that's the end of it. I'll update tomorrow (or whenever it is I get my X5 back).

I had this warning too. Adblue error get system checked by service.
I figured out it was the accessory heater that warms up the adblue and that can not work when battery is low. RAC changed battery for
£260. Error hasn't reappeared since.

I'm on the original battery (batteries?) that is/are now 7 years old. No other 'poor battery' indicators though - everything else working normally. How did you determine it was the AdBlue heater?

just a hunch. It was an original 7 years old battery with 100000km on it. I thought the adblue error coming on at cold weather time was far too coincidental.
Bimmerlink (free) and vgate Pro adapter showed my battery charge was 40% despite good runs.
I figured out I spend £250 on each tyre every couple of years so the poor 7 years old battery needs a replacement for £250 odd.
It absolutely worked in my case.

I'd hope the dealer could figure out if the battery needed replacing. I also hope they're not throwing parts at it until the problem goes away - but it does seem odd that 2x NOX sensors and a meter unit should all fail simultaneously. Guess I'll (hopefully) find out later today.

Picked up the X5. Final bill was £1875. They noticed that brake fluid was due in Apr so threw in that service gratis. Sweetened the pill somewhat but still a bitter swallow.

Cranswick dealers have a set protocol regardless of whether your car is 6 months old or 60 months old.
Importantly I hope your car is fixed. If the warning reappears in a cold morning do think of the battery. Best of luck!

I'm puckering at the moment. My AdBlue has been throwing errors. It's in today for 'diagnostics' and the video has come back showing a lot of build-up on the injector.

It'll be educational to see whether they just clean and re-test, or replace and re-test or just replace everything and charge me £2000 for the privilege.

At the moment my biggest issue is that I only got an M240 loaner... An X6 or new X5 would have been lovely...
The issue is tongue in cheek BTW...

I call my car (2015 X5 40d M-Sport) 'The Lemon'. It's been nothing but trouble for the 22 months I've had it.

EDIT: £527 is apparently what it'll cost me... For a leaking injector.

I had this message show up on my 2021 x5 40d. After 30 mins it said mechanical failure and that in 250 miles the car would shut down. I’m currently driving back from Spain. I put the car from eco mode to sport mode and then the warning went…. Any ideas? I’ve got a 350 mile journey tomorrow to Santander hoping I can get on UK soil as BMW assistance here in Europe have been pathetic!

Just my 2 cents… I've never had an adblue issue and sitting at 119k..

Every-time I do an oil change (5k), I've gotten into the habit of pulling out the injector and cleaning the head, and also refilling both my adblue tanks. The first time I removed the injector it was pretty hard and caked up in there,

Now, it just comes out easy after I remove the retainer. I recommend everyone gets in the habit of this, you're already under the car removing the oil drain bolt.

Hi Everyone, I have the same warning light. Local BMW weren't sure what it was and wanted to charge £240 just to do initial diagnostic. I have booked it in to a local BMW specialist whee the reception lady suggested a blockage. I will let you know the outcome. John
