Upgrade to 20" 469M wheels on New Ordered BMW X5 35i (M sport)
I missed to configure my new BMW X5 from (19" 467M-with all-season run-flat tires) to (20" 469M-with performance run-flat tires) and my vehicle is in Finishing Touches state and the dealer said its not possible to change anything at this moment. He mentioned i will have to purchase and have it installed which i am guessing it will cost more than the $950. Here are my concerns.
1. Is it worth? 2. How much of a difference is the ride? 3. What are my other options other than dealer install them for the same price ($950) |

Be prepared for severe sticker shock ... I was quoted almost $5000 (inc. rims, TPMS stems, rubber and balancing) - the $950 upgrade at order time is by far the best value of any upgrade vis-a-vis what it costs afterwards... Needless to say I kept my 19"s

So the 4k or 5k wheels and tires that you guys quoted might be different from what BMW actually installs during manufacturing.
I am guessing i still have a chip to have the dealer install it for the same price or give me a huge discount. I have a configuration which might be hard for him to sell or lease other than put it for demo purpose. i will for sure give it a shot. Incase i decide to keep the 19" how difference does it make on ride? |

Your dealer is unlikely to even entertain a $950 unless you've got a great relationship. Ride quality has many factors. What tires are you using. Run flats or regulars, EDC, etc One thing is certain about 20" tires. Gas consumption is increased and it costs more to replace the tire. |

Tires, rubber and TPMS monitoring are identical to what is factory installed. No dealer on earth will order and install 20" for $1000 ... so be sure to order them with your new X5 if you want them...
I'm content keeping the 19's even though the 20" look better in most cases. Negatives with the 20" are: 1. Increased fuel consumption due to added weight and additional tire to road contact. 2. Ride quality in terms of NVH decreases. 3. Replacement cost per tire is $500-$600. |

And to add, my Service Advisor informed me last week during a visit that in his experience X5 and X6 owners with the larger wheel size and the staggered configuration typically go through a set of tires about once ever 12 months on average (about 15k miles according to him). You might want to consider that possible ongoing cost.

well some of you might have read my thread some time back...I had exactly the opposite experience...had upgraded to 20"...right before delivery I found out that they are RFTs and I couldn't drive the car in snow...what happened? I ended up buying a winter tire package just to be able to drive the car...
now I have to change the tires every 6 months...had time gone back, I would have sticked to the 19" all-season and saved the big bucks!!! Last edited by Shaw; 03-31-2014 at 10:25 AM.. |

Or you could just get 20" all season Contis mounted and save the summers. This allows your sled to roll on 20s and you don't sacrifice too much in terms of performance. Also saves you the trouble and expense of switching back and fourth twice per year.

+1. This is what I did the the day I took possession of the vehicle. The Continental DWS tires are fantastic in the snow. I've had a few chances to try them out and was more than satisfied with their winter performance. Highly recommended. Because I didn't have the summers on for long, I didn't have much of a chance to compare the ride/handling characteristics. So far, I'm very happy. |

I was thinking about this possibility and order the car with 20" tires 469M which I really like, but one thing is I live in NYC and potholes are all over the place, other thing is the car will sleeps every single nigh on the streets and I do not want it to be too attractive to the thieves. |

Hey guys. I'm a new member. I've been doing a bunch of reading for the first time and keeping up to date with a lot of your threads. You guys have provided really helpful information. I just bought a Mineral White 2014 X5 F15 5.0i with X-Line Package and Black Dakota interior. It has the cold weather package with the 19" 449 Orbit Gray Wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Ice+Snow r-f. 255/50R19 107V. I'm going to post these wheels and tires in the classifieds soon. They're brand new. I just picked up the car from the dealer and drove it home and it's been sleeping in the garage for the past two days because I don't want to add any wear to the wheels and tires. I want to upgrade to 21" because I love the way the 599 21" wheels look. However, I don't want to fork out 6K. I did a lot of research and found XO Caracas Brushed Black Wheels in 20" and 22". They're concave rims. They don't make a 21" for the rim. Do you think 22" is too big? Here are some pics of the 22" rim on a few cars:
1) Old Infiniti FX35 (sorry, this is actually the Verde Parallax rim - they look similar): 2) New Infiniti FX50: 3) New Mercedes G-Wagon: All advice or help is much appreciated. I know I have to buy rims with 74.1 center bore. The stock dimensions of my current wheels are 19x9. I looked into the ADV7.1's - beautiful rims- they make a 21" and the guy said 21x10.5 is recommended on all four. Only thing is, they're way overpriced. Do you guys have any other 21" options or suggestions. Thank you! Last edited by opasha; 04-04-2014 at 03:10 PM.. |
