The MPPK is a BMW developed and sold engine tune that provides increased HP and torque and better throttle response and "sound". I do not believe it is part of the M-sport package.

No, the M Performance Power Kit colloquially known as MPPK is not a part of the M Sport Package. I am not familiar with a "sound" increase unless you opt for the M Performance Exhaust (MPE).

I have it and it sure sounds different to me...

Doesn't it stand to reason that any changes to throttle response and shift points would change the "sound" of the car?

Perhaps. I really cannot verify since I had the MPPK installed along with the MPE. Quicker throttle response and higher shift points only serve to provide a more sensitive throttle application via pedal depress and keep it in the usable power band longer respectively. A pre MPPK engine running at 4500RPM I think would sound the same as one post MPPK. Again, this is just conjecture on my part since I had the exhaust installed in combination.

Nonetheless, I do like the sound though.

The software upgrade itself DOES make the exhaust note louder and deeper. It also adds a little pop with overrun. The exhaust obviously adds another level of meatiness. This is based on my experience with the software upgrade with stock exhaust.
