Just do it. It's free and recommended by BMW.

It's important to release the beast! Factory fluids need to be changed etc; it took all of 1.5 and beg gave a free loaner car. Skip it and regret it when they deny a warranty claim later....just saying.

Agree, it's free and recommended and should be done. I wonder why the previous x6m was not required to have the break-in service or oil change at 1,200 miles.

the oil in the car from new is quite thin , for this reason i would say take it easy to around 1200 miles. saying that the computer will register launches , so if you want to retain all the lovely warrantly features dont launch till running service ;-)

So what happens when the salesman directs you to let it breath on the first test drive? I about jumped out of my skin on the full throttle shift from 1st to 2nd- wow, what a loud bang!
I absolutely did not feel any power difference after the break-in fluid change as suggested by the salesman and maintenance advisor. If it's a lease I don't think you'll ever see a difference regardless of how you break it in. |

I've always done the 1200 mile service on all the M cars I've owned. Best to do it to avoid warranty issues.

I actually didn't know that until I took mine for the break-in service. It also feels different when you get it back. Maybe it's psychological but it definitely feels more ready to go!

I think this is more to protect themselves to avoid an expensive warranty repairs, if something went wrong they have time to minimize repairs if they discover it just 2000 kms from new, if you buy an M you want to press it hard right away and they know it, launch control is limited until 5000 kms, I had the oportunity to be at the workshop when they connect their system to the car, they just scan the car for errors and I never saw anything related to "lets see how this guy cares about the car".

I'm not sure if I'm right but I think the OP was asking the importance of the 1,200 mile break in period, not the 1,200 mile service. As for the break in period on new cars, I always drove my cars hard off the lot since day 1. After all, that is how I intend to drive my cars. These engines are made to be driven that way in my opinion. As for the 1,200 mile break in service, I did take it in when directed. It's recommended from BMW so that's something I wouldn't avoid.

let's put it this way. I've seen it where CPO/BMW extended warranty purchase is denied when a car's records show the break-in oil change schedule was not followed.
Now whether you beat on the car during the break-in period is harder to detect. They'll have to run DME records, which I know Porsche does...but not sure about BMW.
