IIHS Says Most Mid-Size SUVs’ Headlights Are Dim

Little article I read that maybe someone would be interested. X5's headlights are acceptable. Now maybe if antiglare was allowed in NA it might be at the top of the list.

I wonder which BMW X5 headlights were tested - Xenon or LED?

both LED and Xenon rated as "Acceptable"

but if you compare the illustrations, they seem to imply the LED has better straight-ahead illumination and the Xenons do better on curves/turns

Thanks for that link - quite a lot of detail contained therein. If I read the charts correctly, our X5 w/LED is a strong performer on the right side and weak to acceptable on the left. To what extent the anti dazzle coding would improve things is unknown - all in all looks ok to me.

What a load of government crap. If you read the section "How this test was conducted", it states half of the headlights were unacceptable because of glare to on coming traffic, i.e. The driver can see just fine. The most laughable part of this test is that it states most inadequcies found during the testing could be fixed by adjusting the aim of the headlamps. Duh, problem solved.

I believe I was premature to say that anti dazzle would improve bmw x5 grade as it only works on high beams. Maybe it's time the next new tech should be to incorporate anti dazzle into low beams. However if the adaptive lowbeams were able to be used in city driving it may help improve since in normal city driving the beams are pointed more to the left and right to reduce glare. I find the brightness of the beams are definitely better than par on the LEDs.

Note to self: check to see if my anti dazzle and adaptive beams are working.

This is just speculation, but if all things being equal to the extent the beams follow the turn, left turns would require the beam to go further left to equal the right turn performance. Hopefully that made sense.

I think the Euro adaptive would surpass the XC90. When activated, it extends the range of the lighting at any point it can without glaring other drivers. While I appreciate what IIHS is trying to do, I don't know if I agree with their evaluation criteria.

With high beams (non Euro-adaptive LED), the right lane exceeds what IIHS states is optimal by about 50 feet. I think when the Euro Adaptive is engaged, that the left lane would be equal with the right lane. This has been my experience with it anyway.

The XC60 is slightly better in this test, but in real world functionality, I would say they are nearly equal and if the Euro-Adaptive was allowed, would surpass the XC60. Just more reason to get the LED's and code them.

It also surprises me how the XC60 with HID gets a Good, but the XC90 gets a marginal with LEDs.

Good video and chart.

At least the news is up to date on what is needed for safety by stating the pros of adaptive headlights. Let's see if the transportation department gets on to it.

Why? Are you assuming that because the oncoming lane is to the left? The lights are programmed to track your lane of travel as determined by the steering angle of the tires. In that sense, they actually have to go farther to the right because turns of equal centerline arc would produce a smaller radius of right-lane travel to the right, and a larger radius to the left.
