Gas mileage of E70 vs F15

Hi,

I'm in market for a X5 and I'm torn between E70 vs F15.
I much prefer exterior of E70 over F15, but interior of F15 is absolutely gorgeous.
I'm more leaning towards to 2013 X5 SAV pkg model but one thing I'm worried is the gas mileage.

If you have owned both model, is new F15 really much better in MPG in real world? If so, by how much?

I'll toss in my $.02, although I may not be good info for you as I switched from a petrol E70 to a diesel F15.

Mileage on my E70 was 13.5 regularly, doing mostly city. I could get up to 20-22 highway for longer trips.

Mileage on my F15 is 20.5, again mostly city. I've only had it a month and haven't really put it through a highway trip, but others have reported between 27 and 33. Again, that's with a diesel, so not sure that would help you.

There are a few "what's your mileage" threads here that can give you a better idea of what you'd see w/ a petrol F15.

BTW - these mpg #'s are US, not British. I just like the word petrol.

The numbers claim that you get better MPG, but the fact is that the engines on the F15 are more powerful. A simple trade-off I guess.

OP, as David said, alluded to, you really should compare by engine not just E70 vs. F15. Do a search, there are several MPG related threads that should give you tons of information on all of the engine variants. I suspect the differences from engine to engine comparison won't be drastically different enough to sway your decision, where as other comparisons would (tech, steering, styling, etc). I would imagine those other differences are more important, along with your budget and long term plans. But mpg was never part of my decision looking at left over E70's vs new F15's (we got our F15 just as the last few E70's were left).

Wow 13.5mpg is terrible.
I once borrowed my friend's X5 and it was drinking gas so bad that I thought it had some sort of problem, but I guess it was correct indeed.

I don't think that any of the X5 engines perform well (wrt mpg) for all-city. I got <20 on a 35d and ~14 on a 35i. I've seen reports of <10 on 50i's. If I drove 1/2 my tank out at highway speeds instead of stop/go/drive slow all the time, I got much better numbers at least for me (35i=20ish, 35d=25ish). The whole tank on the highway, I could get ~30 in my 35d (with it left on cruise and not playing the 'driving game')

Have you guys checked out http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/x5

I don't use it myself but I stumbled across it when trying to figure out what I should be looking for in my vehicle.

I don't understand why people are buying 5,000 lbs SUV ( Luxury SUV at that ) with huge concerns of fuel economy?

I'm not sure that it's an unreasonable concern, although certainly shouldn't be huge. Why shouldn't we want the best possible fuel economy from our heavy luxury SUVs?

That's a pretty ignorant comment you had made.
These comments are only found in bimmerpost unfortunately.

It's called having your cake and eating it too.

So, speaking for myself, it was more about convenience than actual cost savings, although I'd be lying if I said TCO didn't factor into the equation at all. I paid attention to the mileage because it meant not having to stop at a station so often. And, it's a nice little pick-me-up when I compare my records from my E70 to my F15 and see a decrease in cost. Can't say it was a major deciding factor.

It makes me feel good to know that, while I have a heavy luxury SAV which I enjoy driving, I can have less of an impact on the environment. I also have a Prius V but, guess what, it's not as much fun to drive as the X5!
