I bought one for my F15, works great with an HTC One M8 running KitKat though some of the connected drive apps aren't on Android as yet.

Finally BMW have moved away from either old proprietary or iPhone centric snap in cradles.
Can you give us an update on how you like the universal adapter? What was the msrp? Can you please post photos? All I have been able to find is crude schematics.

Thanks.

I like it, you can just fit an HTC One M8 (with a little fettling) and it seems to give a decent signal boost. It has two micro usb cables, one with a right hand right angle plug and one with a left hand right angle plug so all eventualities are catered for.

For me the centre console is very small compared to other cars I have had so I found alternative storage for what was usually in there anyway.

I paid 130 Euros for it, imported it from Germany through ProcarShop.de, ordered online and it arrived within a couple of days.

I'll post some photos tomorrow when I get a chance.

Thanks for the response NPickles. Looking forward to the photos. Your HTC has a 5" screen. In light of that, do you think a Galaxy S5 with a 5.2" screen will fit into the snap in universal adapter ok?

Thanks

It will really depend on where the micro usb connector is, if it is on the side then it may just fit, if it is on the top or bottom then possibly not.

You'll need to check overall dimensions compared to an HTC M8, same height or less and you're good.

With mine the micro usb is on the bottom so I had to make a couple of mods to the snap in adapter for it all to fit.

What you basically have with the universal snap in adapter is a flat rubber covered plate with a hinged clip that applies light pressure to the phone screen in order for it to stay in place. That clip is hinged at the bottom of the snap in adapter with two hinge mechanisms, ones either side, and I had to dremel a hole between the two hinges for the cable to fit into in order for the phone to sit flat on the plate.

Not mine but a picture of the universal snap in adapter in an X6 from the BMW UK website.

Great thanks for the info and photo.
It's good to hear about the decent signal boost.

It looks like the Galaxy S5 may be a tight fit. The usb port is on the bottom. If anyone tries the S5 with the universal adapter, please post results. Thanks.

If the S5 is too big, could the cable from the univ. adapter be used only (and not the univ. adapter with clip)? The phone could just rest loose in that compartment, but still get the increased signal strength when needed via the cable.

S5 will not fit with universal adapter. I have LG G2 which is shorter than S5 and yet it does not fit by a milimeter or two. This is because the usb port is at the bottom of the phone. For comfortable use, putting in and taking out, I would say a phone with usb at the bottom should not measure more than 135 milimeters (LG G2 is 138.5). If you want to use a large size phone with universal adapter it should ideally have the usb port located at the side, not on the top or bottom, such as xperia from sony. i am thinking of switching to xperia just for this reason.

The S5 will not fit...that is disappointing. I will read up on the Sony phone. I have the Xperia tablet and it is nice, but I find myself using the Ipad much more. It is just more intuitive.

I did not get this option and now I am concerned I missed out on a function I want. Will I be able to connect my iPhone 5s to my car using the white apple USB cable and play music through the iDrive or will I need the BMW y cable? Also, will album artwork show up on the iDrive? My vehicle is at status 112 and they say it cannot be changed at this point! NOT HAPPY!

Yes, you can connect your phone directly to the USB port and control music through iDrive. You can use any standard USB cable that works with your phone. Doesn't require anything special. And yes, album artwork will show up on the iDrive.

Looked into the Sony Xperia Z3 phone. It's very impressive and looks like it's coming to T-Mobile and Sprint. You make a good point, that because of the side usb port, that the universal adapter should work nicely with this phone. The port being on the left side of the phone (vs right) is ideal as the top of the phone can situated properly. The very small bezel beyond the 5.2" screen also increases the likelihood that it will work with the adapter.

The Z3 is 146 mm long, (146 x 72 x 7.3 mm) but with no need for the usb bottom port, will it fit into the adapter? I know above you mentioned not going above 135 mm in length.

If anyone tries this phone (before I do) please post.

I would say 135mm is max for phones with bottom usb connection and would still give some 2 mm margin for comfortable inserting and taking out of the handset. If you use a phone with USB connection on the side you may safely add 1 cm in length which means 146 mm xperia3 should fit. I have not checked it though, nor have I measured the snap-in adapter accurately.

My LG G2 does not fit by milimeter, literally. However, I am using it usually by putting the handset slightly diagonally so that the bottom USB plug stands out of the adapter. If I put it straight in it (almost) fits, just cannot press it all the way down towards the rubber surface of the adapter.

So is this option worth spending $500 for those of us that have iphones? I have an iphone 6 and my wife still has the iphone 5 (though probably getting a 6 soon). What will it allow us to do compared to not having it? Input appreciated. Thanks!
