Depends...what other cars do you have and what are your needs for the X5 or X6? I personally love my X5, but the X6 looks like it would handle really nicely.

Then, definitely test drive both M-sport versions. I feel like you will have much better control and road feel with the X6 because of it's size.

I would've jumped on the X6 while I can (since my kids are still under 6 feet), but unfortunately X5 came out first.

My only guess is it has adaptive suspension of some sort and it lowers as you drive off, that's like a lifted 4x4 running on stock tires. OK, I just realized it is on a slope of some kind, but still that's a lot of gap. |

You guys are forgetting that the side by side comparison listed above is not accurate because the X5 and X6 are both on different/uneven slopes. Also, the X6 is higher up and though slight, there is a weight shift that's pretty obvious.
So as @barbja said, the wheel well is probably pretty similar with the X5.

Need space? X5
Don't need space? X6 Trunk and rear seat will be limited on the X6. Also I think BMW is trying to create that angle stance to make the SUV more aggressive looking than the X5... so the rear suspension is raised a bit higher. It could also be adjustable depending on driving characteristics. Who knows? |

I haven't driven one, but presumably the X6 is going to handle a little better and feel a little sportier. Given you don't have kids yet, and if you won't by the the time you're done with the car, I would say go for the more fun vehicle (though I'm not sure it's a huge margin, but again, haven't driven the X6).
But if you think you'll have kids before you get rid of the car, or have no plans to up-size your wife's car by then, the X6 may prove too small in the back. Now, I'll also add that we used an F25 X3 for our first child and for the first year and a half, for our 2 kids with no real issues. Eventually, it proved too small for two, but that depends on your threshold for the extra planning and/or inconvenience with a smaller car. The F15 we have now still requires a small amount of that compared to, say a minivan or larger SUV (Pilot, Tahoe, etc), but for the most part, the X5 is the perfect size for a family of 4 for both day-to-day and road trips. The X6 I'm sure isn't much different, but you'll lose at least some cargo space, in a way that can be costly when you do start lugging around strollers and pack 'n plays, etc. So, to me, it depends on your plans for the duration you'll have the 2 vehicles you have now, more so than just immediate needs. This all assumes you like the acquired taste that is the X6 styling. I assume you do, having asked the question.. Edit: My vote, since no kids yet: M4. Get it while you don't need the extra room! Why have 2 suv's, I always say Then when you do have kids, swap the X3 for an X5 and the M4 for, ….itself, keep it as long as you can!!! I traded in my S5 when we had our first child because I thought it was impractical and I needed a sedan, despite my wife's car being the family car. For the 3 years I had the car I replaced the S5 with, I never once HAD to put the kids in my car. I did because I wanted to, but never had to (which reads: should have kept the S5!!!!).
