F15 X5 Cannot depress Brake Pedal

Hey all,

This morning on the way to work, i lost my brakes but luckily i was travelling like 20km/h.

I was unable to depress the brake pedal and moved the car to the side of the road and after it came to a stop managed to turn the car off and put it in park. I had a look and it didnt seem the floor mat had moved forward. I was slamming the brakes and the lights hadn't turned on and it was very stiff. I managed to depress the brakes and took off to work with no issues. What on earth could have been the issue? im scared to drive now in case this issue happens again. Where should i start checking?

Wow…don ‘t know what caused the issue…but it does bring up knowing & being prepared to use alternate ways to stop the vehicle.

The parking brake can be used to stop the vehicle, too….I believe you can just pull up & hold the switch in the center console.

EDIT: here’s some info from the owners manual…it appears there may be additional emergency stop and lane change capabilities if you have some driving assist options

I would look in the owners manual to verify that the same applies. And if you use the digital version of the owners manual that's embedded in iDrive...there may be some videos if you have optional driving assist features.

For example...my f06 650ix GC has an automatic braking feature which is mentioned in the iDrive version of the owners manual and has a video found in "animated explanations" tilted active protection:

Emergency Braking from the F15 X5 owners manual.

Alarming. Glad you are OK.

How many miles does the vehicle have? Was it towed to a dealer or an indy shop? Any initial root cause suggestions?
