BTW, I used an H5 AGM as the auxiliary battery since H4 AGM is hard to find and much more expensive. H5 is wider and I had to move the power unit over about 1/2 inch. The battery bracket in X5 50i has a removeable stop and wider sits fine. The hold-down was over to one side with H4 and with a 1 inch wider H5 it is closer to center and is secured well. Nothing is touching, you'd look at the batteries and think it was the original setup.
Nice and I believe Varta is the OE supplier to BMW, or at least they used to be? Appreciate the extra info!

I've been looking at the threads for a while trying to decide which way to go (OEM or not). I have two batteries but I kind of wish I didn't.

I found this combination. Anyone with thoughts? Both are AGM and the H4 is apparently the right size for the AUX, so everything seems to match up.

FYI - the reason I am looking to replace is that I am suddenly getting random issues like parking brake warnings, rear seat fans going on for no reason, etc.

I have the LAUNCH cReader 2023 Elite scan tool and it is telling me things like "bad parking brake button" and "vehicle under voltage" .

The original batteries are still installed so I figure it might be time.. I hate chasing things by replacing parts but there seems to be a somewhat of a consensus that random, seemingly unrelated issues tend to be battery.

Where did you find these batteries? Just curious since I’ve only been able to find the H4 from Rock Auto or BMW.

You have 2015 listed as your model year…so you are within the window of battery replacement…and if you’re having a lot of electrical gremlins that come and go…plus an actual ”vehicle under voltage” warning…I’d say that you are more than likely due for new batteries.

I’d also call my local BMW dealership’s PARTS DEPT to get a price quote. They may be comparable and if local taxes are less than paying shipping & handling..they may be a win.

I’d also double check before buying to see which main battery installed. If you have the H8 and replace it with an H9…then you’d need to CODE that change before registering the new battery. If you replace with like kind for each battery, then all you need to do is register the new one(s).

I’m still unsure if the aux battery in the X5 requires registration since it doesn’t have an IBS and is under the control of the PCU (power control unit). And none of the software I have lists anything for aux battery registration. But some threads do have owners having software/hardware that does register the aux battery.

Single battery models can hold an H9 in the area but if it is an H8 main with H4 aux battery set version the PCU is in the way and the wider spaced battery hold-down welded in nut is not there and you have the plate to hold PCU bracket and provide H4 battery retention. Advance Auto Parts shows the same battery selections regardless of engine selected and battery(ies) you may have when profiling vehicle on their website.

Thank you Qsilver7 , that was really helpful

I have two batteries. Today I went to autozone and replaced the big one with the h8 arm and the little one was the h4 as you described. They didn't have the agm version of the little one but I bought it anyway.

Of course I'll code both new batteries to the car asap

O'Reilly's has the large one in the 105Ah H9-size... It is longer in length & you will NEED to code for the 105Ah size to use it.

Does anyone know which battery fits 2017 X5 40i ?
(N55 engine)

Wife has car @ other home (out of state)

Also...can you replace the battery and drive ? Or is the registering/coding required before she can drive away ?

Thanks in advance....

Just have her stop in for service at a local BMW dealership.

You can call ahead, but I do not think you will get raked over the coals going this route.

Plus, you will know it was registered properly and immediately.

Look in trunk area to see what battery you have. Then buy one locally.
You can use an app on your phone to register it. Look up apps like bimmerlink and bimmercode. Then you just buy an obd adapter off Amazon. It's nice to have so you can check codes and do minor coding.
