Questions about the X5 40e included charging cable

I've had my X5 40e for a couple months now and absolutely love it. A couple questions I haven't been able to find answers for so hoping you guys can help.

1) The charging cable that comes with the car (level 1), is it safe to plug it in outdoors? We only ever plug-in with the cable in our garage but when we go out of town I'd like to take the portable charger with us. Unfortunately the car will be outside.

2) I have the car set to "reduced charge" when plugged in at home. Plugged into a standard outlet in our garage, if our house was built in the last 5 years is it safe to assume that the electrical in the home can support normal charging instead of reduced? (still level 1)

As far as the X5, its been awesome. We got 780 miles on our first tank of gas since delivery. Almost 1000 miles on our second fill up. When most of the driving is done around town and you are mostly on battery it makes a huge difference. In car fuel economy reporting an average of 39 mpg since delivery.

@golovko it is not rated for outdoor. But you can if you are not worry about people tampering with it. Also you have to waterproof it and away from water or snow if you live in those area.

Thanks for the info. Under normal conditions at home, it is always parked in our garage. I'm less worried about tampering where we're going and more so weather.

The OEM level 1 EVSE that comes with the X5 is made by ClipperCreek. It's almost identical to this model:

https://store.clippercreek.com/level...arging-station

120V 12A. Outdoor rated, fully sealed NEMA 4 enclosure. UL certified.

It should be able to be used outdoors under reasonable conditions using a GFCI outlet.

Electrical code is +25% of continuous load so for a 12A EVSE the circuit must be rated at least 15A. If the breaker and wiring meet the minimum requirements then set the car to charge at level 1 Max (it will still take 7+ hours).

If you take the EVSE on a trip, bring an outdoor rated extension cord that at minimum is 15A rated. When charging, if the car is locked the J1772 plug is locked to the charging port and cannot be easily unplugged.

Awesome, thanks for this! That is extremely helpful

Not necessarily stealing it. But, who knows, someone might tamper it.
I would plug the charger inside the garage and leave the cable slipped under the garage door.

Curious what sort of range you are getting on out of town trips. Say you leave on a 200 mile trip fully charged, 200 miles of mostly highway, then arrive and charge, poke around locally, etc... And return? Maybe 30 mpg in this scenario?
Also, are you using the app for remote services? Can the 40e pre heat the interior (sort of like ice vehicle remote start)?

On our last road trip we did about 260 miles one way and barely used 1/3 of a tank. It was a mix of driving at the speed limit and bumper to bumper traffic. I used active cruise control pretty much the whole way. Started out on a full charge as well and kept the car on Auto eDrive

I haven't really tried the app yet. Had some issues registering the car for it since I already have my M3 registered to my account. For some reason it would not let me add a second car so I had set it up under my wife's account.
