I want that fault!!!!

I can't seem to find anywhere to rest my hand where it's comfortable, might as well be steering it myself. The most comfortable place are the two radius struts between the wheel, which have the controls on, but the sensor doesn't pick up on those.

I wonder if a couple of of pegs will work

One other thing, look at this write up for TJA. It clearly states that unlike the Acc with stop n go, the TJA does NOT deactivate after a brief stop.

it get's even weirder : now the TJA switches on without holding the steering wheel !

If this is a due to a malfunctioning sensor, no way I am having this repaired !

It's a pity that this option is not available for the U.S. market.

Confirmed this is correct. It flashes the steering wheel sign after a few seconds hands free, then deactivates with a message to keep hands on the steering wheel.

Pretty half baked feature really, and disappointing.
Well, I tried it again today. Even filmed it with a smartphone. Will post the video later...

My car's TJA will stay on even if I don't touch the steering wheel.

Very strange, because I agree with all of you that the manual states you have to keep your hands on the steering wheel.

What it could be:

-malfunction in the steering wheel sensor (if so, I will definitely not have it repaired !)
-something in the car or around the steering wheel makes the sensor think you are touching the wheel. Would have to know what the sensor actually measures ? (Heat ? Conductivity ? Proximity switch ? )
-Only in Belgium ? (Ie the feature has been turned off because it is allowed in Belgium ?)
-programming error ?
-karma ?

Any idea's ?
It has taken several weeks but I finally got an answer fron BMW

The short version: TJA is supposed to work only when you have your hands on the steering wheel and as soon as you take them off, TJA should switch off.

BMW is aware that in a number of cases, the sensitivity of the sensor in the steering wheel is such that a finger is enough, and that a few cases exist where you don't have to touch the steering wheel at all (mine ! )

As the law makes it mandatory to keep the hands on the steering wheel, BMW is evaluating what to do, ie do they need to take action for these cases, and if so, what action? One thing being examined is to increase the sensitivity of the sensor.

So I have been told to wait, and in the meantime received guarantee that it is safe to use.

My take:

-I don't want it changed ( love it in the traffic jams, it works great and you can read the newspaper ! )
-that steering sensor technology is probably not mature and they don't have an alternative

Has anyone made any progress in coding a US model to be able to do this?

@WDImagineer has it working.

I've installed the parts and done some of the coding but I have yet to get it working. The buttons on my steering wheel work and my cluster states TJA can only be activated on expressways...but when I activate it on the expressway my HUD, Kombi and iDrive all pop up with TJA malfunction warnings. The warnings clear when I exit the expressway.

I got 5AR working! I had all of the coding done but I forgot to calibrate the touch sensor. It is pretty cool - definitely do not need two hands on the wheel. I was able to go hands-free for several miles - I could also silence any complaints from the system by resting the top of my knee against the bottom of the steering wheel. It was raining when I tested it and there were a few times where it immediately deactivated from a "lane too narrow or unable to detect lane markings" error.

32306859265 - Touch sensor module ~60 euro
32307851355 - Steering wheel wiring harness for Touch sensor module ~27 euro
32307851514 - M Sport touch-enabled steering wheel w/heat ~600 euro

My brother lives in Germany so I had him ship me the parts.

I, too, decided to skip swapping out the buttons on my steering wheel - it would have been ~200 euro for the new switch cluster but I did not want to call attention to the feature.

Photos are attached but the process is pretty simple. The "touch enabled wheel" is definitely a different part, it has an additional set of wires that my m-sport w/heat did not. These wires connect to the new touch module. The new wiring harness is required for all US vehicles and is basically an extension that has the new leads for the touch module.

Not sure if all of these were entirely necessary but I VO coded BDC, KAFAS2 and KOMBI. The buttons and notifications worked at this point but the new module caused a malfunction each time I tried to activate it. I used Rheingold to clear the errors and it automatically calibrated the new touch module as part of its "calculated test plan."

I ave purchased the new equipment require for this retro fit and done coding to enable it. When I try to enable to tja it gives me a Traffic Jam Assist Failure on the iDrive.

I notice that you say you need to calibrate the touch sensor however i have no clue on how to do this. Is there any instructions on this.

Your help will be much appreciated.

The calibration process was entirely automated through rheingold. All of the instructions I have come across simply state to let rheingold calibrate the touch sensor. I'm not sure if calibration can be activated/performed by some other means.

Soooooo...
Has anyone figured out a good way to "hack" the sensor? I.e to put something on the wheel to fool it. So far I haven't managed. Tried clothespins, hairpins, tying cord around it etc. It´s almost ridiculous. It can sense if I only hold as much a my thumb on it but everything else it ignores.
Having to hold on to the wheel kind of takes away the point of the function in my opinion so grateful for any suggestions.

It's a driver aid, not a driver replacement, so having your hand on the wheel and being able to respond if an emergency presents itself is why this is necessary.

The touch sensor is capacitive and uses body capacitance to trigger it. Any dielectric material should be able to do it, meaning anything that can conduct electricity. So if it can make your smartphone screen respond, it'll likely work on your steering wheel.

I understand why it is constructed the way it is. However, when I´m in standstill traffic I want to be able to use my phone with both hands without having to reactivate the TJA all the time. Mine often deactivates completely if my hands been off for a little while and does not self-activate when I put them back on.

Thank you for the info!
So, one or two smart screen "dots" glued to a clothes pin or similar may work.

excuse me.

I'm interested in the retrofit of the TJA.

Is it capable of operating at only Coding and handle and sensor exchange of ?

Or do I need additional hard ?

Do I need an automatic steering of options , such as parking assist ?

Sorry to bring this old thread back up, could not find the answers I was looking for anywhere else...

32306859265 - Touch sensor module ~60 euro
32307851355 - Steering wheel wiring harness for Touch sensor module ~27 euro
32307851514 - M Sport touch-enabled steering wheel w/heat ~600 euro

Are these the 3 parts I need, or is there something else? I have the US version of the Drivers assistant package + (ACC+Stop and go) is that all I need? The airbag ect can be reused from the exsisting wheel? The existing M steering wheel wont work? I need to by a complete new one? Can someone tell me the items that need to be coded? Is there an other thread I could not find, if so, sorry for reposting...

Hi PlayTookies,

The whole retrofitting process is pretty simple if you know what to do.

For me it took around 2 weeks as I was clueless, but in reality it should only take a couple hours.

Below is a list of parts I used.

32306859265 - Touch sensor module
32307851355 - Steering wheel wiring harness for Touch sensor module
32307851513 - M sports steering wheel leather without heat as my car didn't come with heat.
61317847654 - Switch, MF steering wheel, M-Sport (You do not need this however reighngold complains about the old switch unit)

After installing all the hardware you need to VO code BDC_Body, KAFAS2 and KOMBI and run a calculated test plan in reighngold in order to calibrate the new touch sensor.

Unfortunately Reighngold is required which was the only reason it took me so long.

I recommend downloading version 3.45 as the other versions gave me trouble when trying to run the calculated test plan.

Just FYI, to complete the thread (info from kyledo123)
Reighngold is also known as ISTA/D. It is a diagnostics program used by BMW to carry out service plans etc. It is hard to get hold of as it is not freeware. I can help you with that tho.

You will need to add 5AR to you FA and then VO code BDC-Body, KAFAS, KOMBI.

The Rheingold software just gives a warning about the multifunction switch not matching what it should be, but the old one works perfectly fine. It is really only the aesthetics that is different.

You are able to increase the "speed limit" to 99 KM and to work on any road type. But then Reighngold complains again about that. This is nothing to worry about but should be set back to the default 60KM when going for a service.
