I think you guys confusing steering effort with what AS actually does
It could be both or neither firm or light, but main idea of it is to change steering ratio
While no one can give us input of how it feels in term of effort and feedback, at least we should know that AS gives you better flexibility maneuvering large car in certain speeds

IMO, it should feel the same as regular steering plus the ratio change

P.S. I loved it on my 335i and on X6 50i i drove

I agree, if you like light steering then the Active Steering option was a must on an E70 and made the car feel like a Lexus from a steering perspective.

On the F15 platform I personally feel like the $1500 can be better used on other options.... Test drive a new 5/6/7 series to understand how the new X5 will steer and I strongly believe that you will cancel the option on the new X5 order as the new electric steering is very light to begin with.....

Thank you

I hope people understand the difference between "light" steering, referring to effort level, vs. actually changing the steering ratio. I posted this on another thread and will just paste it here:
"I assume active steering varies the steering ratio (as opposed to simply varying boost). I've got no problem with variable boost, if that's something you want, making it easier to move the steering wheel at lower speeds, like in a parking lot. However, I've driven variable ratio cars before and I hated it. It was very distracting. After driving for awhile, your mind, hand eye coordination, etc, become calibrated to the steering. If you are used to driving around at 40 or 50 mph, then slow down to pull into a parking lot, suddenly a small movement of the steering wheel produces a larger turn of the front wheels. I always found myself surprised by the sudden change in turning ratio and would have to adjust mid turn to not turn in so sharp. Didn't like it at all. My advice is to try it before you order it, and at least understand the difference between variable steering ratio, and variable steering boost."

Military Sales: Production date Nov 2013

Ok, the Germany military program just sent me an automatic email stating that my order with BMW for my X5 is in the system with expected production for November 2013. Is it just a coincidence that the email comes out exactly when there is an ordered government shutdown? I am guessing BMW is afraid that many military folks will be canceling their orders.

Ha ha. Probably a mere coincidence.

My car has been built for more than 2 weeks. My dealer said it would be released the end of October.

My car is still awaiting production. I wastold they likely wont release fir consumer sale until 11/1. There are incentives from drive events that expire 10/31 ans they want to make sure nobody gets them on a new model.

They control what cars those incentives apply to, they don't need to hold the vehicles because of them. If you've done the drive event, check the email where your coupon was delivered, says something to the effect of "on eligible vehicles." My understanding is that the vehicles being held are just waiting for the official launch. Only reason that makes sense to me is to try and get rid of the remaining '13's, so people that can't wait, won't....
