Is it true by looking at the engine and the cover where is says Twin Power Turbo and BMW on the sides, the covers that are black are the N63TU and the one's that are gray are N63?

All f15 / F16 vehicles have the N63TU. Why are you asking? Are you looking at a used 50i?
If not, this is a question the F10 5 series forum might be able to answer for you |

All the F15/F16 50i has the N63TU
All of the old E70 X5 and X6 50i has the old N63. Can't be anymore clear than that.

I am looking into a used X6 50i and sometimes the VIN is not readily available. A service advisor said you can tell the difference by the color of the plastic. Just wondering how true it was...that's all!

Not really...when I plug certain VIN's in a decoder it says N63 when sellers say it's N63TU. This is why I had asked originally if there was a quick simple way to spot a "TU" without having a VIN. Like I asked earlier...is the color an indicator?

Looks like all of them are E71. So they all are N63.
