EGR temp sensor error

NOW FIXED. SEE BELOW!

First time posting in this forum, so hello!

I've got an F15 with the N57 3.0 diesel (35d). The EGR cooler was replaced under the recall about 10 months ago.

Recently, it's thrown an EML. I read the code on my generic code reader, which showed: "P041D - Exhaust Gas recirculation temperature sensor B circuit high"

I then ran BimmerLink and the error is similar: "2B5C00 - Exhaust gas temperature sensor after additional EGR cooler, signal: interruption or short circuit to positive"

I guess its a faulty sensor. Before I go ahead and order one, could anyone confirm which one it is?

I can see there is a coolant temp sensor as part of the EGR system: 13627823993 #15 on here: https://bmwrepairguide.com/part-diag...stem-egr-11516

Or is there another one for the 'gas' temperature?

I received tte same CEL and code yesterday and have the same question. Where is this sensor located. Also was wondering about the recall, Do you have details on that?

Pretty sure mine’s not done.

Thanks.

I assume this one:

Also here, I've just noticed on page 3 is shows the EGR temp sensor:

I'm in Canada, so I was called by my local dealer and informed the EGR cooler needed to be replaced.

Just updating this as I still haven't found any solution/answer yet.

So I've learnt that there are two EGR coolers on the 35d, one at the front and one to the left of the engine (as you stand in front of the car).

My error is suggesting the temp sensor AFTER the additional (i assume the secondary) EGR cooler is as fault, which I assume is the one to the left (not front). Looking at the diagram below, there are two temp sensors on here. Parts 19 & 20.

#20 is AFTER the EGR cooler, so it must be this one. I need to remove the airbox etc and see. But my plan is to clear the code first, and then unplug the sensor to confirm if it throws a code relating to it. Then i know its that sensor and order a new one accordingly....

Thanks for keeping the post updated with your findings. There are a handful of Diesel owners on here that I'm sure your post will help at some point.

Absolutely, and I second the previous post. Thank you for this. And, if you’re inclined, please share your sensor source and any DIY details on it’s replacement.

Btw. Do you see a part number for sensor at #19?

Ok - I've done some sensor findings and basic process of elimination.

Firstly, I want to correct what I posted above (I've now updated my post). #20 is the EGR temp sensor for the additional EGR cooler (left of engine). #19 is the EGR temp sensor for the main EGR cooler at the front of the engine. The BMW parts diagram is a little confusing.

This is the secondary/additional EGR cooler temp sensor, circled in yellow, including the connector. Left of engine (as you face the car):-

This is the main EGR cooler temp sensor & where the connector is:

To access both these sensors, I removed the engine cover, airbox & pipes, unplugged the MAF sensor. The main EGR cooler temp sesnor connector is at the back towards the bulkhead under the sound insulation.

Results.

1) Unplugging the secondary temp sensor, did not put an EML on the dash, however it stored the same error I had been receiving and at the current mileage. Also, BimmerLink would not clear the code with the sensor unplugged. I plugged it back in, cleared the code. Unplugged again to confirm.

2) To make sure its wasn't the main temp sensor, I disconnected that. It gave me a drivetrain error on the dash (and display), but also an EGR error as well on BimmerLink:

Summery - I'll order and replace the secondary EGR temp sensor and hopefully that solves this intermittent issue. Part #20 - 13628574358

I'll come back and post once I've done this and confirm if it did indeed fix it.

Just updating and closing off this one.

So I replaced the sensor yesterday. I've done 150km and the EML didn't come on! Pretty much safe to say that the secondary EGR temp sensor was the fault. Took me 5 mins to replace it as well.
