COMMENTS

The rumormill and speculation for the second generation X6 has begun cranking. Autocar starts us off with many morsels of preliminary details/rumors. Here is a summary list of the details:
  • Introduction within next 18 months
  • Will feature even more aggressive styling than current model
  • Styling and look will move further away from X5, for more individual look
  • Length to increase approximately 1.3 in / 33 mm (for extra interior room)
  • Longer wheelbase and wider track
  • Weight savings expected from:
    • Composite steel structure platform, which uses a higher percentage of hot-formed high-strength alloys
    • New axle assemblies, which are said to be shared with the 5-series
    • New electronic torque-vectoring system (lighter than current mechanical torque-vectoring system)
  • Lower-end models will ride on steel springs and top-end models will continue with self-leveling air suspension, with dampers offering three levels of stiffness
  • Hydraulically operated anti-roll bars set to be made available as an option
  • New state-of-the-art FlexRay' electronics platform allowing the central processing unit, electronic chassis upgrade, and various multimedia systems to be easily upgraded when new software packages become available
  • Powered by new or upgraded twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter petrol, sequential twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel and tri-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines, as well as revised twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 petrol units in both standard and M model, all with expected power increases
  • Plug-in X6 ActiveHybrid also under development.
  • Joined by X2 and X4 SAV models by 2016

Info above and render below courtesy of Autocar.

No second-gen X6 prototypes have yet been spotted, but as soon as it's spied, we'll be sure to bring it to you.

Why would they be making another ActiveHybrid X6? That didn't last long at all, although I am grateful for its existence as the ActiveHybrid X6 hood has been kindly donated to the 2013 X6M's

Interesting little gem in there about the "tri-turbocharged 3.0L Inline 6"... If this is true I wonder where else we will see this new engine.

Practicality of a coupe, dynamics of an SUV. Winning combination indeed.

I would actually want the opposite. Unless this is sarcastic, which is tough to pick up on in text.

The original X6 Active Hybrid was a joint venture of Daimler/Chrysler/GM. This new version would use a new architecture/drivetrain/battery based on the ActiveHybrid 3/5/7 or a plugin version of such. Basically, the old one was expensive, and saw limited fuel saving capability. A new gen should be better in every respect.

this is horrible if it actually looks like that! An SUV is supposed to look big and rough like the current one. This is just a knock-off of the concept 4 series plastered onto a bigger canvas. Its hideous. it reminds me of audi who slam the same exact face on all their cars wether SUV, hatch, sedan,...

It looks as if that render was given a fifteen minute deadline hence its current X6 with 4er conceptitis detailing. Very lazy.

The new X4 determines the new approach to the sportier coupe activity vehicles, which means they will differ much more in appearance than the standard SAV.
It is not a 4er in face but it gets that added expression of dynasm like the coupe in its more sleeker and widened track and muscular haunches.
The new X6 will also differ in styling to the standard X5. Employing a more dynamic look rather than simply being a twin.

Another render of the X4. But still not as accurate yet.
The idea is familiar but the execution is very distant.

I hope the renders use of the f32 front end proves to be false.

The X6 was the only 'big' BMW that does anything for me aesthetically. I really hope they don't kill it with fugly like they did on the 3 series.

It's been in development for almost 5 years now so don't be surprised if its in the new M3/M4 & X4.
